Smoking and Pregnancy?
• Objective -Identify the impact of tobacco on a developing embryo and fetus.
Bad – Very Very Bad!!!
• Carbon Monoxide and other harmful chemicals from your cigarettes or from second hand smoke get into your baby’s blood.
Best to Never Start – Next best – quit ASAP
• Your baby gets less oxygen. Lack of oxygen can cause your baby to grow more slowly and gain less weight – This means the brain and vital organs grow more slowly also. A low birth weight baby is a much greater risk of other health problems.
It is never too late to quit!
• You will be at higher risk of miscarriage.
• You will be at higher risk of preterm birth. A baby born too soon generally has breathing problems and can have long-term health problems.
Yes – it is stupid!!!
• Your baby is at higher risk of SIDS – (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Crib Death)
• Your baby may have learning and behavior problems later in childhood.
