THE CHALLENGESBUSINESS: “We need an RTLS-solution for the hospital-wide real-time tracking of assets (e.g. beds, pumps, wheelchairs, …). We want to monitor the utilisation of assets in order to support e.g. predictive maintenance. We want to use sensors to e.g. monitor the T° in refrigerators or certain health parameters of patients (IoMT).”
TECHNOLOGY: “We need small and inexpensive tags with a long battery life and support for T° of up to 135°C (e.g. autoclave). We want to maximise the use of our existing infrastructure with minimum IT overhead. The solution should be easy to integrate with our existing applications and services. We prefer a cloud-based offering.”

THE “SMART HEALTHCARE PLATFORM” (SHP) IS BASED UPON BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY
Machine-readable representation of data. Readers are required to read the data in the barcode. ADVANTAGES: Most inexpensive solution for traceability. No batteries required.
DISADVANTAGES: Requires manual interaction. Works only in the immediate vicinity of the scanners. No sensor capabilities. No indoor localisation.

Consists of a small chip and an antenna. Readers are required to read the data in the tag.
ADVANTAGES: Inexpensive. No batteries required.

DISADVANTAGES: Expensive. Requires on-site Wi-Fi infrastructure. Short range (ca. 25m). Battery life heavily dependant on number of data transmissions.

ADVANTAGES: Supports outdoor localisation. Supports sensors. Works “stand-alone”. Long range.
DISADVANTAGES: Most expensive solution. No indoor localisation. Battery life heavily dependant on number of data transmissions.

REQUIREMENTS: On-site SSX Locator Proxy software (VM). Wi-Fi AP’s (access points) with built-in BLE support.
ADVANTAGES: Can use existing Wi-Fi infrastructure.
DISADVANTAGES: IT network integration is required (Locator Proxy software). Not all Wi-Fi AP’s can read the complete BLE tag message (payload), missing information like e.g. T°, movement, press button. Data-delay. Sometimes Wi-Fi AP suppliers charge hefty licensing fees to enable the BLE functionality.
WI-FI AP’SWI-FI AP’S WITH BUILT-IN BLE
REQUIREMENTS: On-Site SSX Locator Proxy software (VM). Fixed BLE locators connect to the network (LAN) via Ethernet (PoE).
ADVANTAGES: Complete BLE tag message (payload) can be read. No extra licensing fees charged by Wi-Fi AP suppliers. No data-delay.
DISADVANTAGES: Requires installation of additional hardware (Fixed BLE locators) and IT network integration. Additional cost.
FIXED LOCATORS (SSX-L)BLE LOCATORS WITH BUILT-IN POE
REQUIREMENTS: Mobile Locators only need power (110V/220V/5V USB/PoE).

■ The Sensinxs “Smart Healthcare Platform” (SHP) runs on the AWS cloud (Amazon Web Services) and is highly scalable & redundant due to its “serverless” architecture. It is also an “Open Platform” with support for 3rd party hardware and services (no “vendor lock-in”).
■ All BLE data is streamed to the SHP platform using the AWS-IoT service. On the AWS cloud additional services are being used for the processing, storage and visualisation of the BLE data (Kinesis, Lambda, DynamoDB, AuroraDB, Cloudfront, Cognito, API gateway and S3).
■ “Machine Learning” algorithms for e.g. more accurate indoor localisation, asset usage, predictive maintenance, … . Blockchain is optional.
■ The SHP is GDPR & privacy compliant. SHP via “Private Cloud” is optional.
