A native of Massachusetts, Marine artist Paul Garnett is entirely self-taught. For
sevenyearsheservedastheshipwrightonMetro-Goldwyn-Mayer’stallshipreplicaofthe
famous “Bounty” that was built for M.G.M.’s 1962 production of Mutiny on the BountystarringMarlonBrando.HisartworkhasbeenfeaturedinNauticalWorldMagazine,Marine
ArtQuarterlyandSeaHistoryMagazine.,Quarterdeck, ‘Soundings,’,TheNauticalResearch
Journal,and“NorthCarolinaHistoricalReview,aswellastheNationalMaritimeHistorical

Society’sChristmascard.HehasalsohadhispaintingsappearonA&E’sSeaTalesaswellas
TheHistoryChannel’sprogramHistory’sMysteriesandonehasbeenlicensedtobeusedin
thebackgroundofafilmduetobereleasedin2019.TheClintonCountyHistoricalSociety
inNewYorklicensed“BattleofValcourIsland”asaposterfortheirrecoveryprojectonthe
lake where the battle took place. This painting has also been used in Facts on File’s
RevolutionaryWarAlmanac. “Artof theSea”hasfeaturedtheartist’spaintingsfivetimes
over a number of years and the number 8 2006 edition of Denmark’s HistorieMagazine
included the artist’s ‘MenAgainst the Sea’ aswell as a painting of Joshua Slocum’sSpraybeingfeaturedintheir#112014issue. Mr.Garnett’spaintingshavealsobeenfeaturedas
thecoversofthetrilogybynavalhistorianWilliamH.Whiteaboutthewarof1812–APress
ofCanvas,AFineTops’lBreezeandTheEveningGunaswellasMr.White’sotherworksof
fiction and non-fiction. NicholasNicastro’sworkBetweenTwo Fires, a novel about John
PaulJones,usedMr.Garnett’sartforthecover.Hehascurrentlycompletedartworkforthe
firsttwobooksofWilliamWestbrook’sseafictiontrilogy–TheBermudaPrivateerandThe
Black Ring. He has also done CD cover art for the Telarc’s “Masters & Commanders”
recordedbytheCincinnatiPopsOrchestraconductedbythelategreatErichKunzelandfor
“Secret Signs” recorded by the Bow Triplets, an Irish/Celtic folk music group based in
Europe.
The artist’s originals can be seen at the J. Russell Jinishian Galley in Fairfield,
ConnecticutandtheCamdenFallsGalleryinCamden,Maine,aswellasonhiswebsite.They
haveappearedinsuchshowsas“ModernMarineMasters”atMysticSeaport,“WaterWays”
at Art of the Sea, “Charlestown – Then and Now” at the Charlestown Naval Museum,
“MastersandCommanders”attheUnionLeagueClubinNewYorkCity,“ArtoftheBoston
Waterfront” at the John Stobart Gallery in Boston, as well as in the Maritime Gallery at
MysticSeaportandtheMerchantMarineAcademyinKingsPoint,NewYork.
InJuly2005,Mr.GarnettwasinvolvedintheNationalJuriedExhibitionatthe12th
AnnualMaritimeArtExhibitionattheCoosArtMuseuminOregon.Mr.Garrett’sworkwas
alsofeaturedandauctionedattheDonCesarHotelonSt.PetersburgBeachinthesummer
of2002whenhewasOPSail’sfeaturedeventartistatthegatheringofTallShips.Boththe
ConstitutionMuseuminCharlestownandtheMarineMuseuminFallRiver,Massachusetts
have permanent exhibits of his work, as do theMinnesota MaritimeMuseum, the North
CarolinaMarineMuseuminBeaufortand,morerecently,theNationalCoastGuardMuseum.
TheartistisalsoalongtimememberoftheNationalMaritimeHistoricalSociety,the
International Society of Marine Painters, the Nautical Research Guild, as well as being
electedin2018asaSignatureMemberoftheAmericanSocietyofMarineArtists.Heworks
fromhisstudioinMarlborough,Massachusettsandwelcomesvisitors.

Shipyard,framedandreadytodisplayalong
withhismodelofUSSConstitutionwhenitis done. President John Adams and
Massachusetts Governor Increase Sumner
attendedconstitution’slaunchingceremony.
Upon launch, she slid down the ways only
27 feet before stopping; her weight had
caused the ways to settle into the ground,
preventing furthermovement. An attempt

twodayslaterresultedinonlyanadditional31feetoftravelbeforetheshipagainstopped.
Afteramonthofrebuildingtheways,ConstitutionfinallyslippedintoBostonHarboron21October1797,withCaptainJamesSeverbreakingabottleofMadeirawineonherbowsprit.

Bobdisplayedthepartspagethatheenlargedaswellasthepaperfigurehemade
withthetinyparts includingHanSolo’ssidearmincludingthepartspage fromwhichthe
parts were cut out. He also showed a page from Paul Sanchez’s site –
www.papermodelers.com that showed 1:200 & 1:250 sailors laser cut as well as Paper
Human Website tear-out strips. The figure he showed he made using thin wire at the
shoulderandhipjointstoallowbendingoftheextremities.
VenetianGondola–CrawfordWesterling Crawford has nearly finished his 1:24
scale yacht styled after a Venetian gondola.
Themodelkitcamefromayachtsurplusstore.
The kit featured a solid hull and scales out to
beabout48feetinthisscale.Crawfordlikesto
use traditional yacht buildingmaterials in his
models and so it is with this one using teak,
mahoganyandoak.Hescratchedthecabinand
addedtheteakdeck.Radarandradioantennas
were added to the cabin top, as was a
surfboard forusewhile inportand thesurf is
up.
The oar or rèmo is held in an oarlock
known as an fórcola. The fórcola is of a
complicatedshape,allowingseveralpositionsoftheoarforslowforwardrowing,powerful
forward rowing, turning, slowingdown, rowingbackwards, andstopping. Everydetailof

the gondola has its own symbolism. The iron prow-head of the gondola, called “Fero da
prorà”or“dolfin”,isneededtobalancetheweightofthegondolaatthesternandhasa“Ƨ" shapesymbolicofthetwistsintheCanalGrande.Underthemainbladethereisa“sestieri”
ofVenice.Akindoftoothjutsoutbackwardstowardthecentreofthegondolasymbolizing
the IslandofGiudecca. The curved top signifies theDoge’s cap. The semi-circular break
betweenthecurvedtopandthesixteethissaidtorepresenttheRialtoBridge.Sometimes
threefriezescanbeseenin-betweenthesixprongs,indicatingthethreemainislandsofthe
city:Murano,BuranoandTorcello.(Wikipedia).
The Rémo and fórcola on Crawford’s yacht will be used as a steering oar and of
coursetheferomustbeincludedasadefiningfeatureofaVenetiangondolaandmakesfora
finefigurehead.TheItalianflagatthesternstartedoutasaMexicanflagandwiththeeagle
inthecenterstripepaintedout,becameItalian. Abrassrivetservesasaflagholder. The
yachtwillfeatureelectricpropulsion.
FriedrichWilhelmZuPferde–DonDressel
Don brought in a German
warship for Frederick William (“The
Great Elector”) of Brandenburg, the
State that became the heart of the
powerful Prussian Kingdom. Mr. G. C.
Peckelhering built this German frigate
between1660and1661intheshipyard
ofPillauPrincpauté.It’slengthwas125
feet, thewidth 32 feet and the tonnage
about900tons. Theshipwasdesigned
with50/60gunsandacrewof250men.
The Fredrich Wilhelm zu Pferde madeseveral trips. Theywere in 1685 from
Pillau to Emden, in September 1691
from Emden to Shetland Islands under
thecommandofCaptain JeanLeSageasanescort for theDerfflinger (amodelpreviouslybuiltby JohnBakkerandmastedand riggedbyDoncurrently inamuseum). On July25,
1692,alongwitha large fleet, theFredrichWilhelmzuPferde sailed fromEmden,headingtowardsGuinea.DuringthetripitandtheSalamanderwonavictoryoveraFrenchship.Atthis time inhistory,BrandenburgwasatwarwithFrance. In thenightofOctober30/31
1692,threeFrenchshipsfoughttheFriedrichWilhelmzuPferde.Withthefirstcannonades,CaptainJeanLeSagewaskilledandtheshipwassetonfire.
Don brought in the model as he was having difficulty with the La Real, whichdeveloped a twist in the hull due to the very hot and humid conditions in Don’s garage.
UntilDon figures outwhat to dowith the twistedhull and somehow straighten it (it has
neverhappenedbeforetoDon),hewillputtheLaRealonholdandworkonothermodels.DickRoos,aone-timememberoftheSMAandagoodfriend,originallybuiltthemodelhull.
Dick was no longer interested in building the model or finishing it, but wanted it to be
completed,soDonpurchasedthehullfromhim.Themodelwillbecompleted,butalotof
work has to be done. The deck furniture, cannons, and carvings including the quarter
galleries,figureheadandsterndecorationshavetobecarved.Thenthemastingandrigging

hastobecompleted.ItistoobadthatSidSiegelisnolongerwithus,ashewouldhavebeen
abletodoamasterfuljobofpaintingthefigureonthesternoftheship.
Donalsomentionedthatapparentlysomeofthefiguresaremissingfromtheitems
obtained fromDick, soDon calledAgesof Sail to ask for anewset of castings. Thesehe
planstocarveeventuallyinwood,butthecastingswouldhelp. AgesofSailinformedDon
thatEuromodel, thekitmanufacturer, toldAgesofSail thattheydonotmakethecastings
for themodel, but farm it out to a casting company in Italy. Unfortunately, this casting
companyinItalycaughtfireandburneddown!ThereseemstobealotoffiresinItaly!The
castingsarestillbeingsought,sothismodelalsomaybeputonhold.
WappenVonHamburg–JohnBakker WappenVonHamburgwasstartedin1667andtookservicein1669.Shewasusedas an escort vessel on voyages to the Spitsbergen (aNorwegian archipelago in theArctic
Oceanthenusedasawhalingbase).OnOctober10,1683whileontheCadizroutfirebroke
outinthebowandspreadthroughoutthe
ship.Theshipexplodedwhenfirereached
the arsenal. The admiral lost 42 of 170
sailorsand22ofthe50soldiers.
Whatisknownisthattheshipwas
builtonthemodelofleadingDutchdesign.
Wolfgang Quinger, in Wappen VonHamburg I (1980), suggests that the pair(Leopoldus Primus & Wappen VanHamburg) may have been more or lessreplicasoftheDutchshipAemilia.Ifthisisso,WappenVonHamburgwouldhavehada length of about 130 feet and awidth of
almost 36 feet. To get over the shoals in
theriverElbe,thehullwasprobablybuiltafterthe“Rotterdamform”.Armament:54guns:
26X18-pounders,18X8-pounders,4X6-pounders,6X4-pounders.
Johnhas completed the1:40Corel kitmodel ofWappenVonHamburg. Thebuildrequiredovercomingmanykitproblemsincludingage.Thewalnutsuppliedinthis40-year
oldkitwasquiterough.Alotoffillerwasrequiredtogetittothepointwherehecouldjust
sanditsmoothandpaintthehull.Thefittingssuppliedwiththekitwereroughalso.Many
wereonesidedandtheguncarriages,madeofpot-metalandcamewithovalwheels(not
round).Johnhadtodevelopatemplatetoplacethegunportsallatthesameheightabove
the deck. The end result is quite pleasing with an abundance of Baroque carvings and
sculptures,ahighelaboratesternandthreeornatelanterns.
Johndoesnotplantomastorrig themodel,ashe indicatedthat themodelwould
thenbetoolargetobuiltacasefornottomentionthefactthatthewouldhavenoroomin
hishometoplacethemodel.Johndoescaseallhismodels,sothehullitselfwillalreadybe
quitelarge.AndYES,thegunportsARElinedupcorrectly.
CSSVirginia–BobZmuda CSSVirginiawasthefirststeam-poweredironcladwarshipbuiltbytheConfederateStates Navy during the first year of the American Civil War; she was constructed as a
casemate ironclad using the raised and cut down original lower hull and engines of the

scuttled steam screw frigate USS
Merrimack. Virginia was one of theparticipants in the Battle of Hampton
Roads, opposing the Union’s USS
Monitor in March 1862. The battle ischieflysignificantinnavalhistoryasthe
firstbattlebetweenironclads.
Virginia’s battery consisted offour muzzle loading single-banded
Brookeriflesandsixsmoothbore9-inch
Dahlgren guns salvaged from the old
Merrimack. Two of the rifles, the bowand stern pivot guns, were 7-inch
caliber and weighed 14,500 pounds
each. They fireda104-pound shell. Theother twowere6.4-inch cannonof about9,100
poundsandcouldfirea72.5-poundshelluptoarangeof3,357yardsatanelevationof15
degrees. Both amidships Dahlgren’s nearest the boiler furnaces were fitted-out to fire
heated shot. Onherupper casematedeckwerepositioned twoanti-boarding/personnel
12-pounderHowitzers.
Bob’smodelofCSSVirginiaisbeingconstructedfromaLindberg“GreatMomentsinHistory”(vintage)kit.The“boxscale”sizedkitis1:245andincludedboththeCSSVirginiaandtheUSSMonitor.TheVirginiaismostlycompleteandneedsthescrewaddedandsomeweathering.Bobsaidthecurrentpaintschemeisspeculativeandthatmaychange.
MysteryShip–JimIngersoll Jimbrought in amodel thatwas a gift to him from a Czechoslovakian gentleman.
The scale andmethod of construction are
unknownandheisinterestedinfindingout
what ship themodel represents. To your
reporterthisappearstobeanicelybuiltkit
with sails typical of kit-built models. The
detailsaresimilartoa15th0r16thcentury
carrackornaoandinsomewayssimilarto
Columbus’ Santa Maria or Magellan’s NaoVictoria. However therearedifferences inthe details of each of these examples and
some additional searching on the Internet
is likely to provide a match. Jim did
indicate that thereweresomeareas in the
model that had to be repaired also,
especially in the rigging. Therewerehundredsof shipsof this type thatwere sailing the
oceansoftheworldinthe15thand16thcenturies,sofindinganexactmatchtoaparticular
shipmayprovetobeverydifficultwithouttheaidofthebuilderofthemodel,whichasyour
editorremembers,wasCzechoslovakian. AnysuggestionsfromreadersofthisNewsletter

John started off the meeting by
discussionhisWappenvonHamburg,whichhehasfinallycompletedasfarashewillgo.
He does not plan tomast or rig themodel
due to the fact that he has no room in his
hometocasethemodel ifhefullyriggedit.
AshealreadybroughtittotheregularSMA
meeting, it is shown in the firstpartof this
newsletteralongwiththewrite-upbyDave.
He did talk about the procedures he
followed inbuilding themodeland the fact
thathemountedthedrawingofthehullona
boardsothathecouldeasilytakeoffallthe
neededdimensionsand locate theexactpositionof thegunportsonhismodel. Healso
talkedabouthisprogressonhisHMSPrince, towhichhedidthesamethingbygluingthedrawingontoaflatboard.Therewasalsoa
discussionabout theerrors in the location
of the gunports, aswell as the size of the
lightson the frames,whichwere too large
forthepartssuppliedinthekit.Itisagood
thingthatJohncheckseverythingbeforehe
actuallystartscutting,asthescrollworkon
the frames would have resulted in very
large holes for the lights. There was also
some discrepancy with the location of
gangways and doors. It will be very
interesting next month to see what
solutions John has come up with to solve
theseproblems.Thekitheisbuildingisan
oldAmatikitwhich isno longer inproduction, sounlessamodelerhas collected thiskit,
manyoftheproblemswillnotbepresentedtoanothermodeler.Pleasenoteinthephotoof
the HMS Prince that John is building that he planks the decks before installing them, aprocedure that he likes. John stated that gun port locations on this model were also a
problem.
Donwasnextupwhichbeganwithadiscussionofhisongoingproject,theSpanish
GalleyLeRealbyDusek. It isa long,slimhull that,Donthought,wouldnotbendortwistduetotheextensivestructureofthehull,butithappenedanyway.Thehulltwisted!Until
he findsaway tocorrect the twist in thehull, thismodelwillbeputonhold. Oneof the
things that came out on the discussion that followedwas the fact that the high heat and

humidity in the garage where Don does
his modeling probably had a lot to do
withthetwistingofthehull. Inaddition,
discussions on how to correct a twist in
the hull began, one good suggestion
coming from Steve,who had corrected a
twist on one of his models in the past.
There will be a lot of research and
thought given to this problem and a
methodfoundtocorrect thetwistbefore
themodelprogressesanyfurther.Donis
also in the middle of having his eye
cataractsurgeryonbotheyes,sothiswill
delaytheresearchforamonthormore.
Inthemeantime,sinceworking
onbuilding shipmodels cannotbeput
on a total hold by Don, he began the
construction of the HMS Prince, aMamolikitin1:144scale,thefirsttime
Donhasattempted tobuildamodel to
thisscale. Itwillresultinamodelthat
is of a ship-of-the-line but also small
enoughthathecanmastandrigit,case
it,andfindroomforitinhishome.The
sizeiskindofbetweenafullscaleHMS
Prince like John is building and aminiature model like Gus Agustin
would build. The photo shows the
model on a building board with the
framesanddeckbracesinstalled–butNOTglued.Correctionshadtobemadetothegroves
inthedeckboardsplusseveraloftheframestoalignproperly.Thenextstepwillbetoglue
theminplaceonceeverythingisalignedcorrectly.Donhadalsorepairedhisairconditioner
inthegaragetomakesurehedoesnothaveanothertwistinghullproblem.
Donalsoindicatedthathewasimpressedwiththeplansandinstructionswiththis
kit.Theyevenexplainthatyoushouldplankononesideofthehull,thenplankanidentical
plank on the other side
of the model to avoid
possible twisting of the
hull. Theseinstructions
are better than most
modeling instructions
supplied in European
kits.
