Introduction to RefWorks

Finding Popular and Scholarly Articles What is RefWorks? RefWorks is a bibliographic management tool that allows you to:

• keep track of citations found in hundreds of databases

• create folders to organize and share these citations

• and then create a bibliography

• Click on the logo on the library home page to get started

RefWorks – Open an Account

• Create a RefWorks account by clicking on Sign up for an Individual Account

RefWorks – Create a Folder

• Create as many folders as you need to organize your work.

• You can create subfolders to organize your citations within a folder.

Finding Popular and Scholarly Articles

• All of the disciplines taught at St. Lawrence are displayed on the library homepage.

• GENERAL SOURCES is an excellent starting place for many researchers.

• There’s no one, single “right” index. Use a combination if indexes to do comprehensive research.

• Academic Search Complete provides broad, multi-disciplinary coverage

and supports “Federated Searching”.

Academic Search Complete

• Before you enter search terms, click on Choose Databases to search multiple indexes at the same time.

• Check off all of the indexes that pertain to your research topic and search them simultaneously (this is called Federated Searching).

• You can restrict your results to Scholarly /Peer Reviewed Journals only if you wish.

• Use the Geography filter to limit your results to the US

• The FULL TEXT of many articles is available online.

• HTML Full Text – words only, prints quickly.

• PDF Full Text – words, graphics, and charts are included; might take awhile to download and print.

• Linked Full Text – takes you to a PDF in another database.

• Use FIND@SLU to locate journal articles that are not FULL TEXT.

• Click on Illiad to request this article via Interlibrary Loan. • As you find useful citations, click on Add to Folder for eventual export to

RefWorks.

Exporting Citations to RefWorks from Encore Databases

• Click on Folder View.

• Check off all the citations you want to send to RefWorks.

• Click on EXPORT.

• Choose Direct Export to RefWorks.

• Click on SAVE.

• Citations are sent to the Last Imported Folder

• Move the citations from the Last Imported Folder into the Sitcoms folder.

Other Useful Indexes

• ProQuest Central is an excellent source for Popular Culture topics.

• GenderWatch looks at topics through a “gendered lens”.

Google Scholar

Click on the Settings gear to add Import to RefWorks link to your results list.

• Click on More, then SLU Links to see if St. Lawrence owns this book.

• Don’t buy articles found on Google Scholar; we might already have them, or we can get them via InterLibrary Loan

RefWorks – Editing Citations

• Open the Sitcoms Folder.

• Click on the yellow pencil icon to edit.

• Scroll down to the Abstract field

• Delete the text and add your annotation.

• Click on Save Reference at the bottom of the screen.

RefWorks – Adding Manual Entries

• From the RefWorks Toolbar, click on References/Add New.

• Choose the output style you’re using to create your bibliography.

• Choose the Reference Type of the citation you’re adding.

• Click on Save Reference at the bottom of the screen.

RefWorks – Sharing Folders

• From the RefWorks Toolbar, click on Organize and Share Folders.

• Find the folder you want to share, and click on the green arrow icon.

• Use a descriptive Title, as this will appear on the RefShare screen.

• Under Limitations, check off the rights you’d like the “sharee” to have

• Enter YOUR email address. • Click on SAVE.

• From Organize and Share Folders, click on Email This Share.

• Send this email to everyone with whom you want to share your folder.

• You can change the Subject line to make it more descriptive.

• This link takes them to your folder in RefShare.

• You can change the text of the message as well.

RefWorks – Creating a Bibliography

• From the RefWorks main page, click on Create Bibliography.

• Choose the output format you want to use

• Choose WORD document

• Choose the folder you want the citations to come from

• Click on Create Bibliography

• Always check your bibliography for mistakes!!!!!!!!!!
