Gears
Gears are wheels with teeth thatfit together. When one gear is
turned the other one turns, too.The smaller wheel turns more
quickly but with less force, whilethe bigger one turns more slowly
with more force.
Wedge
A wedge as a tool is used to pushtwo things apart such as the
blade of a sword and knife doeswhen it cuts wood. A wedge canalso be used to lift an object or
hold an object in place.
Screw
A screw is a special kind ofinclined plane. It's an inclinedplane wrapped around a pole.
Screws can be used to lift thingsor to hold them together, like jar
lids, or of course, screws.
Inclined Plane
Inclined planes connect lowerlevels to higher levels and allowyou to use less force to move an
object. Some examples ofinclined planes are ramps and
slides.
Lever
A lever is a long, sturdy bodythat rests on a support called a
fulcrum. The fulcrum is theplace where the lever pivots. Itmakes it easier to lift up heavyobjects. Levers can also be used
to weigh things.
Wheel and Axle
The wheel is the round circleand the axle is the rod that goesright through the very center ofthe wheel to help it move and
stay in place. It's a simplemachine that helps make work
easier.
Pulley
Pulleys are made by looping arope over one or more wheels.
They are often used to liftheavy objects: pulling down onone end of the rope creates anupward pull at the other end.
Carabiner
A carabiner is a metal loop, which can be opened on one
side. This side is called a gate. The other side is called spine. They can be used to secure
looped ropes.

Lock and Key
A lock is a mechanical device forkeeping others from opening adoor, window, or a safe. Can beopened by turning its matching
key in the lock.
Snap Shackle
A type of fastener that can beused with just one hand. It can be
unfastened under load. Not assecure as other types offasteners, but good for
temporary needs. Can be quicklyattached to ropes or harnesses.
Crank
A crank is an arm attached to ashaft that can be used to rotatethings like gears. Bike pedals
are an example of cranks.
Inclined Plane
A strong thick cord of strands(as of fiber or wire) twisted orbraided together. Can be usedto tie together, pull, drag, or
secure objects.
Connecting Rod
A connecting rod is exactly whatit sounds like. It is a rod that
connects two moving parts in amechanism
Crank and Slider
This mechanism is made ofthree important parts: The crank
which is the rotating disc, theslider which slides inside thetube and the connecting rod
which joins the parts together, like the wheels of a train.
Rollers
A roller is a friction-reducingmachine that allows you to
move a heavy object along theground.
Wooden Plank
This long wooden plank can beused with any machine,
mechanism, or component tomake something new. It is 8 feetlong, 4 inches wide, and 2 inches
deep.
