Shropshire CyclewayHIGHLIGHTS AROUND SHREWSBURY
The Shrewsbury cycleway lets you experience some of the best of the Shropshire countryside only a short distance from the county’s main town Shrewsbury, which is itself a fascinating, attractive and historic place to visit on any trip to Shropshire.
Cycle-friendly places to stop along the route for a break or picnicHaughmond Hill CaféHaughmond Hill is a pretty hill east of Shrewsbury maintained by the Forestry Commission. It’s a nice place to walk with good views. The café is open daily.
Haughmond AbbeyA short detour from the main route, these extensive ruins of an Augustinian abbey which was probably founded in the 12th
The Country Garden Plant Centre A short detour from the main route, this garden centre is situated in the grounds of Black Birches House which dates back to the 12th century. It has a popular tea room which is open daily and offers a discount for cyclists. www.countrygardenroses.co.uk
Merrington Green A peaceful wooded nature reserve showing no traces of its history as a US army camp during World War II.
Churncote Farm ShopFarm shop and café open daily, serving lunch and breakfast. www.churncote.co.uk
PolemereA recently-created nature reserve with a glacial lake formed in the last ice age at its centre, which is a haven for waterfowl.
Lyth HillAs you cycle, you will have a good view of Lyth Hill to the north. The hill is accessible by bicycle; if you fancy a bit of a detour to see some fantastic panoramic views, you can climb the hill along the Shropshire Way from Exford’s Green (unsurfaced).
century, are worth a visit. Managed by English Heritage the abbey is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from March to October. www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/haughmond-abbey
Astley Astley is a pretty village with a medieval church which dates back to the 12th century.
Old Atcham BridgeA pretty place to stop for a break by the river, the bridge was built in 1774.
Attingham Park
Attingham Park is an elegant 18th century mansion with Regency interiors set in an extensive deer park. It is managed by the National Trust. When the park is open it is more pleasant to cycle on the road through the park than use the road which runs alongside it. The National Trust offers free entry to the park grounds if you arrive by bicycle. The shop is open year round; the café has seasonal opening times, check website for details.
www.nationaltrust.org.uk/attingham-park
There is also a café at Home Farm in the park grounds.www.homefarmattingham.co.uk.

Shropshire CyclewaySHREWSBURY CIRCULAR
A note on where to startThe route shown on this map starts at Shrewsbury Sports Village on Sundorne Road and leaves Shrewsbury via route 81. This facility is a good place to start as it has a car park and toilets and is on the main cycle route through Shrewsbury. However, as the Shrewsbury cycleway is a circular route, you can start at any point along it. To avoid cycling on the A5, the main trunk road around Shrewsbury, it is best to exit the town using either NCN Route 81 (to the west or east) or NCN Route 44 (to the south); these routes are also shown on the map.
A note on route options on the west side of ShrewsburyThe A458 at Ford is a busy trunk road with a very narrow footway. Therefore, many cyclists may wish to avoid this section of route. The alternative option to avoid Ford is to follow National Cycle Network routes 81 and 44 into Shrewsbury and out again and leaving/joining the main cycleway route at Arscott and Montford Bridge. This option is shown on the map.
Family friendly ride Looking for a shorter, family-friendly cycle route? We recommend National Cycle Network route 81 from the Quarry in Shrewsbury town centre to Uffington. A detailed map and description of this route is available in our Family Friendly Rides: Traffic Free Adventures leaflet. For a longer ride with on-road sections, why not continue on to Attingham Park? Try the routes featured in our Shrewsbury Cycle Rides leaflet.
