Shepherd’sVoice By Don Riddle
Sliding, Falling, and GodA couple of weeks ago Mark Copeland slipped and face-planted on the ice on the north side of his home. Aside from two black eyes and a good scare, he is alright. You know the story: his feet hit the ice and in a fraction of a second he was on his face. Some of you may have hit the wet spot on your tile floor and a fraction of a second later you are on your back or face. My brother-in-law slipped crossing a small stream and fractured his right wrist when he tried to catch himself.
Even in our spiritual lives, things catch us off-guard and knock us off our feet at times. If sin knocks us down, we have Jesus’ blood to lift us up again. If it is sin, or events, or people in life, note the encour-agement from the following scriptures:
1 Corinthians 10: 12 -13 – “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
When there is no one around, there is always “Someone” around: Ps. 73: 1-2 “Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.”
At times we feel alone, unworthy, so far from perfect. Everyone seems to be watching us: Ps. 38:16- “For I said, “Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.” For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me.”
But God sees and God acts: Ps. 37: 23-24 - “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand .”
Potentially slipping, falling. That is why we need one another: Ecc. 4: 9-10 - “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”
When we try “to be good”, but fail: Ps. 145:14 - “The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.”
Therefore: Ps.18: 32-36 - “It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great. You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.”
Watch your step and hang on to your Help!
Those Serving in January
The Life of Christ is the title and topic of our new adult Bible classes that begin on Sunday. This study is based on a college-level class on the Life of Christ. It prom-ises to be a challenging and rewarding study for all who will participate.
A study guide will be provided to everyone in class so that each one will have the material in advance. This study guide will also serve as a resource and reference to the Life of Christ long after this study is concluded.
If you are determined to make this the year that you go deeper in your pursuit of God and study of his Word - then this class is for you!
Make this Sunday (the first Sunday of the year) the starting point of your commitment to become a better Bible student. It will bless your life!
