History

1956 IBM Model 350 Disk File...

How much storage do you think this drive held?

5MB of data!

The surface of the disk is so flat that if the disk was from Perth to Sydney long, the biggest hill would be 30cm high...

The disk spins so fast that if scaled it would take 3 seconds to cover the distance.

Hard Drive Facts

A finger print or particle of smoke would be enough to cause the read head to crash into disk. (3nm)

Only a buffer of air using Bernoulli's principle keeps the head off the disk.

To make disks fit so much information all the tolerances have to be tiny!

The average server hard drive fails ~10% every 3 years.

Cheaper, portable hard drives that take more abuse fail far more often.

Failure Rates

“I avoid Seagate drives like emails from Nigerian bureaucrats looking for a bit of help getting money out of their country.”

Some People Say:

These have a limited amounts of writes before they where out!
