WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING?

Service-learning is a teaching method that combines service to the community with classroom curriculum. It is more than merely community service. It is a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while fostering civic responsibility.

BENEFITS OF SERVICE LEARNING

Increased sense of self-efficacy as young people learn that they can impact real social challenges, problems, and needs.

Higher academic achievement and interest in furthering their education.

Enhanced problem-solving skills, ability to work in teams, and planning abilities.

Enhanced civic engagement attitudes, skills and behaviors. Many leaders in public service today speak about how they were nurtured, inspired, and shaped in early experiences in community service or volunteering.

WHAT DOES SERVICE LEARNING MEAN TO ME?

Service learning is a way to give back to the community and a way to show how much I appreciate those in the community who support me.

Service learning is a way to help those in need.

Service learning is a way to get out of the house and help people of all ages, including children and elders.

SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS

Blazer Build- My team and I helped to build a house for a lady who could not afford a house herself. I got to meet her, and I felt really good knowing that I could help by giving her a roof over her head.

Blazing Through the Books- On several occasions, I read to children who have a hard time reading. I helped them to develop reading and writing skills.

Accelerated Reader Booster at the Basketball Game- I checked kids who had done well at Accelerated Reading into the basketball game so they could watch the Blazers play.

South Georgia Classic Golf Tournament- I walked the entire golf course and was a marshal for two golfers (I kept score for them).

WHAT I GAINED FROM MY EXPERIENCE?

I felt really good after I helped with each experience.

I was proud that I had helped many people. Seeing the faces of the children I helped

made me feel like I wanted to continue to do service projects like this throughout my life!

I felt like I had helped many people that deserved to be helped!

Thank you!
