Serra de Tramuntana

Serra de Tramuntana is located in north of Mallorca.In it, there are a lot of places to visit, for example, “Penyal d’Honor”.

THE CLIMATE

The climate is typical of the Mediterranean, where the temperature is warm.In summer, the maximum is between 29ºC and 31ºC, and in winter, the minimum is between 5ºC and 9ºC.Also we can say that the rainfall is seasonal.

FLORAThere are a lot of strange plants. In Serra de Tramuntana exist twenty five species and subspecies uniques in all the world.For example, Pinpinella bicknelli, Brassica balearica, Euphorbia fontqueriana, Viola jaubertiana, Brimeura duvigneaudi, Asplenium majoricum, etc.

FAUNA

In the group of the invertebrates there are gastropods as snail, arachnids as spider and crustaceans as shrimp.

However, in the group of vertebrates, we can find two protected species: the frog called “Ferreret”, and the bird called “Black Vulture” or “voltor negre”.

Also we can find other birds species like Egyptian Vulture, Osprey, Booted Eagle, Red Kite, Eleonora's Falcon, Peregrine Falcon, Wryneck, Crag Martin, Tawny Pipit, (Rock Thrush), Spectacled Warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Firecrest, Serin, Crossbill and Cirl Bunting.

THE MONASTERY IN LLUC

THE MONASTERY IN LLUC

This is the most important place of Mallorca of pilgrimage, singing school, botanical garden, museum, picnic area, camping and hotel, starting point for hiking , and much more things.It is located over 500 m high in the Sierra de Tramuntana.On the grounds of the monastery,  we can be found different bird species, as well as Wryneck, Booted Eagle, etc.

In Serra de Tramuntana there are many towns and villages, as well as, Andratx, Banyalbufar, Bunyola, Deià, Escorca, Esporles, Estellencs, Fornalutx, Mancor de la Vall, Pollença, Puigpunyent, Selva, Sóller, Valldemossa, Orient, Ullaró, Biniaraix, Sa Calobra, Llucalcari, Biniarroi, Binibona, and Binibassí.

TRAMUNTANAAlso there is a small surface of some villages which pertain to Serra de Tramuntana, as well as Alaró, Alcúdia, Calvià, Campanet, Lloseta, Palma de Mallorca and Santa Maria del Camí.

THE HYDROLOGICAL LANDSCAPE

In the Serra de Tramuntana has been built a complex network of traditional architecture related to water to control and take advantage of this.

It was built trying causing minimum environmental impact. The water arrive at different towns and people use it.

ORAL TRADITIONS

Four different aspects can be distinguished:-Toponyms: it’s the study of

names to know where they come from. In this, we find geography,  history and the language of Mallorca.-Legends: They’re mountains’s legends and sometimes, some passages from history are also the source of this type of popular tradition. For example, ‘Cabrit i Bassa’ legend.

ORAL TRADITIONS

-Folk tales: they are ‘rondalles’, tales or imaginaries narrations in prose. Sometimes, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains are the setting of these. For example, Rondalles de Mallorca.-Songs and gloses: They are oral and improvised rhymes which are popular in Mallorca.

CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS

The municipalities that form the ‘Serra de Tramuntana’ have created a lot of cultural events with over time. Periodically, they organize activities to celebrate each traditional festivals or events.

There are a lot of villages in the Serra de Tramuntana and therefore, there are a lot of traditionals festivals, but however, we want to highlight the "Moros i Cristians" from Pollença where people celebrate the war which happened in the past.

-Festivities: including Christmas, Saint Anthony the Abbott, Easter week, Corpus Christi, Saint John´s Day, the Festivities of Saint Peter and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the ‘Valentes dones’ and ‘Es Firó’, ‘La Beata Valldemossa’, the Alaró Cossiers, and dance of ‘Les Àguiles’ in Pollença.

WALKING ROUTES

In the Serra de Tramuntana there are a lot of routes to do. For example, you can hike from ‘pas de Mortitx’, through the 'Cova de S'Aigo', 'Voltes de l'Ullastre‘, 'Rafat d'Ariant', 'cala de les Bruixes', ‘estany dels ànecs', 'Barranc de Mortitx‘ to ‘pas de Mortitx’ again.
