The Women Helping Women Fund provided $10,000 to the Learning

Center at Anna Ogden Hall or the purchase o new computers. As an

integral part o the recovery program’s educational/vocational component,

these computers will assist residents in gaining skills absolutely necessary

in today’s job market. In addition, they will be used to teach literacy

and help women preparing or GED exams or college entrance. Women

Helping Women and the Union Gospel Mission share a common goal o 

empowering women to turn their lives around. We deeply appreciate

their very practical contribution to our Learning Center.

Safe HarborSae Harbor is a new ministry sponsored by Union Gospel Mission to help

men and women who are engaging in dangerous behaviors but not in

need o our shelters. The program matches trained mentors with men and

women who are still unctioning in society but know they’re headed in the

wrong direction. Sae Harbor provides one-on-one help in recovery and

the spiritual growth needed to sustain recovery. I you or someone you

instr uctor  noticed his natur al abilit y  and assig ned him to an on-the- job tr aining  position w her e he could lea

r n and be paid atthe same time.  Laid of  dur ing  a slow per iod, he nished his 

schooling  and ear ned cer tication as a w elder . Now  he’s back to w or k, and his condence lev el is hig h. “I’m not pla y ing  that same old tape  in m y  head an y  mor e: Y ou’r e w or thless.  Y ou’llnev er  amount to an y thing .”  He’s pla y ing  a new  tape now :  “I’m an honest, car ing , dependable, tr ustw or th y  indiv idual.”

hearT To hearT

According to a recent article by Rebecca Nappi in the Spokesman Review , brothers

and sisters who stay connected have healthier, possibly even longer, lives. Siblings

share a common history and are likely to be the longest relationships o a person’s lie.

Plenty o opportunities to practice conict resolution and orgiveness arise between

brothers and sisters. (Believe me, I have our brothers. I know.) God created the

amily as the primary learning ground, the basis or society as a whole. Sometimes,

however, as in our cover story, the inuence o amily is overwhelmingly negative.

The enemy’s number one strategy is to divide and destroy amilies – to take what

God created or good and twist it. Sunday had to walk away rom her amily, but God

is bringing about a rebuilding.

• WorkNet is oered as a one-week seminar at the men’s

shelter. The purpose is to help men identiy their interests

and skills, nd a job that interests them, get the job, and keepthe job. Lesson one: Work can be more than a paycheck; it

can be ullling. Resumes are written and mock interviews

conducted.

• Learning Centers at both recovery programs provide

training in literacy, computers and GED preparation.

• Sae work environments: UGM Motors and the UGM thrit

stores were both created to provide job training and work

experience or otherwise difcult-to-employ individuals.

• Women at Work is oered as part o the women’s recovery

program. Communication, ethics, interview skills, and

appropriate dress are among the topics addressed by TianyRiddle, educational/vocational manager, and her team o 

community experts. A shopping trip to the UGM thrit store and

ashion shows o appropriate and inappropriate work attire

are workshop highlights. Tiany also works with community

businesses to arrange volunteer apprenticeships or women

in the nal phases o the program.

• Paid internships throughout the ministry are available to

program graduates.

David wrote in the Psalms that there is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Sunday ound that Friend in

Jesus Christ, and together, they charted a new course. Sunday separated hersel rom her amily or a time so that

she might heal and build a new lie. Fortunately, she ound that crucial, amily-like support at the Union Gospel

Mission thrit store. Fellow employees and management stood by her, loved her, and prayed or her. Eventually, she

turned sibling pressure on its head and began to inuence her amily or good. Now, her sister Angie is attempting

to ollow her lead.

When you give to Union Gospel Mission, you impact lives, and those lives impact other lives – amilies, riends,

employers, acquaintances – and the impact reverberates in ever-spreading circles o inuence. That’s what we’re

about – not just getting people back to work, but getting them back to work as whole, healthy individuals who can

make a dierence in another lie. Not only are you helping to spread positive inuence, you are helping put an end

to negative inuence. Sunday was the rst person in her amily to blaze a dierent path. She broke the cycle o 

crime, drugs and incarceration because you helped create a sae work environment where people truly care about

each other at the Union Gospel Mission thrit stores. Thank you.
