1 The Art ConnectionUrban Revitalization

/ professional project 2 (final dissertation) /shamus mulcahy

“How can an architectural intervention act as the catalyst to inner city revitalization by engaging with conditions of social and historical significance as well as those beyond the physical realm. Can the physical, func-tional, visual and aesthetic qualities of an intervention lend impetus for other places to also develop?”

/ Design Studio 7 / Prof. Stephen Loo

Site : Port Said, Cairo,

Egypt

Target User : -Fishing Community

-Local Residents-Tourists

The proposition for a 17-storey mixed use tow-er focuses on the influences / effects of flow as the main building form generator. Reflecting on the vernacular architecture of the ‘Kasbah’ (clustered community housing) in minimizing solar gain, this project does so vertically.

Flows considered:

#Flow 1 : Wind

#Flow 2 : Heat

#Flow 3 : Water

#Flow 4 : Social

• Incorporating the 4 Flows into form-making

• Form Flow testing

Cinema4D virtual testing Wind Tunnel physical testing

Laser-cut fog-catching skin

• The building skin response to

(i)High humidity and fog = water harvesting

(ii)Low humidity, hot, dry air=evaporative cooling

Northern Facade

The curved areas di-rect the wind around the building and optimizes the cool-ing effect.

The fog catcher inlets streamline wind flow which is then subject-ed to the stack effect in aiding the continu-ous movement of air between the double skin façade.

Southern Facade

Clad significantly in Photovoltaic panels . The expression of these sustainable features on the façade sends a message to the community on the ‘green agenda’ we’re on.

Overall Vernacular Emphasis

thermal mass, courtyards and pas-sive cooling reduce dependence on energy and give birth to a more sustainable architecture.
