7. What are the two types of surface waves?

Rayleigh waves

Love waves

8. Which seismic wave stay on Earth’s Surface?

Surface wavesare seismic waves that stays on the surface.

S wavescannot penetrate the liquid outercore.

9. Which seismic wave refracts and cannot penetrate the outer core?

P-wave

10. Which seismic wave can penetrate the core but refracts?

P waves also refracts but is able to penetrate the core.

P-wave

11. In what directions do the P, S, and Surface waves move?

sideways

Right angle

rolling

P waves - compress and expand the ground like a accordion

S waves - vibrate from side to side as well as up and down

Surface waves - make the ground roll like ocean waves

12. What Are Seismic Waves?Seismic waves are the waves of energy caused by EARTHQUAKES or the sudden breaking of rock within the earth or an explosion.

There are different types of seismic waves based on the movement . The two major types are body waves ( S and P waves ) and surface waves. Body waves can travel through earth inner layers while surface waves can travel only on the surface of the land.

13. Which is faster S or P wave?

Figure 19-11, page 504Observations of seismic wave velocities have enabled scientists to subdivide Earth’s interior into various layers.

14. Where do seismic waves travel slowest and fastest? Explain.

Solid Crust

Partly melted asthenosphere

Lower mantle

CoreS-waves do not penetrate the core

Seismic wave travel faster in solids.

Refraction or bending of waves provide scientists information on the composition and interior of Earth.

15. Which type of wave can penetrate the outer and inner core?

16. What happens to S and P waves as they travel inside earth?

Refraction

18. What are earthquake waves?

18. What are earthquake waves?Earthquakes waves are known as seismic waves.

19. How fast are seismic waves?

19. How fast are seismic waves?Seismic waves travel at a speed of 8 kilometers/second or 5 miles/second.

20. How are the layers of Earth different from one another?

20. How are the layers of Earth different from one another?

Crust is the thinnest layer and mostly made of rocks, the mantle is the thickest layer, the outer core is liquid iron while the inner core is a spinning solid iron.
