Hurricane Harvey (NASA)

• Hurricane Harvey delivered up to 50″ of rain to

Houston, Texas from August 25 to 28, 2017.

• Planet satellites captured the resulting flooding

along the Gulf Coast—including Motiva Refinery

in Port Arthur.

• PlanetScope provides wide-area coverage.

• SkySat allows detailed monitoring of flood

impacts and recovery.

DEFORESTATION

Rondonia, Brazil

July 19–22, 2016

The distinctive pattern of

‘herringbone’ deforestation is patches

of cleared land extending from roads

into the rainforest.

Roughly 19 hectares of rainforest

(highlighted in blue) were cleared in

this area over the course of 2 weeks…

PLANET

USE CASE

MONITORING LAND RECLAMATION

South China Sea

© 2017 Planet Labs Inc. -

Proprietary and Confidential

OVERVIEW: Develop a POC demonstrating an ability to apply

multiple analytic techniques to analyze one issue

METHODOLOGY

● Planet Engineers found the recently developed Ladd Reef in

press reporting

● Used NDVI to identify land reclamation

● Applied CV techniques to count ships

● Compared ship counts to AIS data provided by a commercial

partner

RESULTS

● NDVI shows viable proof of concept to monitor land

reclamation in South China Sea

● Ships are distinguishable and can be counted

● AIS analysis reveals ships captured in the images were not

emitting AIS

OPPORTUNITY: Extend analysis to multiple reefs in South China

Sea. Explore combining ship counting and AIS comparison to open

water areas to show more complete picture of the maritime environment

IDP CAMP MONITORING

South Sudan

OVERVIEW: Planet Engineers developed a POC demonstrating

ability to automatically monitor change in a defined area of interest

METHODOLOGY

● Took the mean of the R band, thresholded, and counted all

pixels above the threshold (white tents)

● Compared to UN-reported IDP population data from internet

● Created demo application examining 16 features across 8

countries in multiple geometries

INSIGHT

● Approach successfully tracked growth of IDP camp over time

OPPORTUNITY: Apply to thousands of geometries examining growth

or decrease of multiple features (tents, buildings, etc) worldwide

PLANET

USE CASE

IN-PORT SUBMARINE DETECTION

Xiangshan, Ningbo, Zhejiang

TASK: Identify the presence of docked submarines at a Chinese

Military Sub Base in Xiangshan

METHODOLOGY

● Used CV techniques to isolate sub pixels in an image

● Subs, in this case, are darker than the water threshold set to

isolate non-water pixels

RESULTS

● Successfully detected the presence of docked submarines

with small number of false positives

NEXT STEPS

● Refine algorithm to decrease false positives due to shadows

● Extend to multiple submarine ports

MISSIONS POC SUPPORTS

● JIPOE

● Order of Battle Monitoring, I&W, and PoL

OPPORTUNITY: Adding this capability to already built moored and

docked ship counters would provide a more comprehensive view of

maritime activity in port in certain maritime environments
