Transcript of Sebangau Park Proposal (tourism object)

I. BACKGROUND

Sebangau is a National Park

between Sebangau River and

Katingan River in Central

Kalimantan which still maintained is

continuity and is a peat swamp forest

are exploited for purposes of

research, science, education, support

aquaculture, tourism and recreation.

Another that was also a place of

reservation in it, especially the flora

and fauna. Results of 2006 there is

6000 - 9000 orangutan, 106 species

of plants including plants typical of Borneo. In addition, there are 166 bird species typical of

hornbills’ bird in Kalimantan. There are also more than 35 species of mammals beside

Orangutan, for example Proboscis Monkey (monkey with long nose that only live in Borneo

island.

The potential for other attractions in the park is natural existence. Therefore, National

Park Sebangau is very important to keep continuity to the present forest is much severally

damaged. From the 66.000 hectares peat land forest area are damaged in Natural Park in

rehabilitation of Sebangau turn out that only 850 hectares or less than 2 %. The damaged is

incurred due to illegal logging, fire, and the indifference of society.

III. ESTIMATION OF BENEFITS

Social and Culture Benefits

Represents an object in the development of science, education and research

The realization of the contribution of national parks in the development of sciences

and knowledge of tropical peat resources.

Ecology

To maintain the balance of both biotic and abiotic life on land and waters.

Esthetics

7 & 8. Natural Laboratory of Peat Forest (NLPF)

Memiliki keindahan sebagai obyek wisata alam yang dikembangkan sebagai usaha pariwisata alam / bahari. has a natural beauty as a tourism object that was developed as a maritime nature tourism business.

Pendidikan dan Penelitian/social and benefit culture

Merupakan obyek dalam pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan, pendidikan dan penelitian. Represents an object in the development of science, education and research

Economic Benefits

The availability of economic access to development areas.

There is an incentive for conservation principal.

Its access to the utilization of available natural resources such as; non-timbal forest

product and fisheries.

Available environmental services such as ecotourism and carbon activities trad/ biorights

and water services.

Environments Benefits :

Ensuring maintenance of ecological processes is effective in the long term.

Maintenance of ecosystem structure and peat land in the area of National Natural Park.

Maintenance of hydrological functions of the region as an effort to preserve life support

system.

Maintaining habitat for the conservation of orangutan, bekantan, Ramin, Jelutung and

gemor.

Unrecoverable function of degraded ecosystems through restoration and rehabilitation

effort tropical peat swamp forest as germplasm conservation.

Preservation of ecosystems integrity that used.

IV. ACTIVITIES TO BE IMPLEMENTED

Infrastructure Improvement

1. Lory

Repairing the lory’s rail in order to make the visitor feel more comfortable

and safe beside that the lory should be made a longer and broader for more

secure and it can accommodate many visitors at least 10 people.

2. Suspension bridge

It will be built to facilitated all visitors who able to across the river for to do

their research or only for sightseeing.

3. Cable car

Adding the new facilities in Sebangau National Park. There is cable car. It

use to make easier for visitors to look around the National Park from above.

So visitors will be interested.

4. Natural Laboratory

Improving the Natural Laboratory of peat forest in Sebangau National

Park look like the traditional Dayak house (Betang) and adding the

laboratory facilities.

5. Black Orchid Garden

Special garden for black orchid cultivation. This way purpose for preserve

the distinctive black orchid a rare central Kalimantan.

V. THE METHODS HOW IS THE PROGRAM CARRIED OUT

1. Revitalization program run a million hectares of wetlands that have been declared by the

president. If this program could work well and succeed, there will be so much abundant

food supplies in Central Kalimantan. Because during these communities rely on revenue

from the Central Kalimantan province. Automatically the price of everyday goods is

relatively high because a large postage burdened. With abundance of rice production,

horticulture, agriculture and animal husbandry, will automatically decrease the market

price of the necessities of life.

There are several obstacles that occur in peat swamp forests, such as frequent fires that

destroy the land itself and the potential negative impact on the environment. In addition to

fires, the forest is also common Sebangau illegal logging. It also must be considered how

to minimize it so that one million hectares of land revitalization `it can run smoothly.

2. Water system management

Water system management to restore hydrologic stabilization. Also to keep it remains

wet peat that is not flammable. With condition such peat lands can be applied to water

system management program with a system of dignity.

1. Increasing water absorption in peat lands, peat becomes so wet and non-flammable, as

in the case of fires that often occur.

2. Dignity is also used traditionally by local people in to collect forest products like

timber, rattan and others.

3. Conservation of Orangutans

The Tropical Peat land Research Project works to protect one of the most important

areas of tropical rainforest in Borneo-The Sebangau Forest in Central Kalimantan,

8

Indonesia. To monitoring the distribution population status, behaviour and ecology of the

forest’s flagship ape species – the orangutan and agile gibbon-carry out biodiversity and

forestry research, provide scientific feedback to conservation managers, and maybe we can

work with our local partners to implement conservation programs. Needed volunteers to

help as collect vital research data from conversation. Needs long-term on going program of

research in which we monitor. Orangutan and gibbon density; forest biodiversity; habitat

structure, productivity generation and disturbance. We have satellite monitoring stations

throughout the national park from which we collect these data annually in order to assess

trends in the condition of the forest and its wildlife. This is a large amount of data and we

couldn’t collect it all without the involvement of volunteer researchers.

4. Improvement, repair or manufacture Sebangau access road should be improved so easily

accessible, especially on land infrastructure. Repairing or making road access to the sebangau

must be increased for easy reach, so that people is easy to visit national park Sebangau without

feel afraid with the road condition.
