Buzau town is the capital of Buzau County about 110 km North of the Romanian capital, Bucharest.

The town has got a population of about 120 000 people. 98% of its population is of Romanian nationality and 96% is of Christian Orthodox religion. Buzau county contains 2,7% of the agricultural surface and 2% of the industrial and agricultural production of the country. The major industries are : the glass industry ( sheetes of glass for windows, windshields for cars, home decorations made of glass), railway components, wire and nets made of wire, welding electrods, etc. Unfortunately the global economic crisis leaves a mark on the economic life of Buzau County, too. The agriculture is on the decline, the number of unemployed people is increasing constantly.

The region has got a big touristic potential, unfortunately insufficiently exploited. -The muddy volcanoes with their moon-like landscape.-The modern sculpture outdoor exhibition at Magura. The works of many Romanian modern sculptors are scattered all over the hill among trees and bushes, a superb symbiosis between man’s art and God’s nature.-Sarata Monteoru, a resort with healing spring waters, is also the place where the archeologists discovered the prehistoric culture of Monteoru.

THE MUDDY VOLCANOES

-The Amber Museum at Colti, a unique display of different colours of amber, from pale yellow to black.-The beautiful park Crang, a small part of what was once a huge forest, Codrii Vlasiei, which covered almost the entire southern half of Romania.-The cave „Six kids”, an underground cave situated under the Meledic Lake. It is the longest cave of salt in the world (1337 m). It is the second cave in the world as rarity and it has three entrances.These are only a few of the touristic attractions of Buzau County.

From the cultural point of view, we can mention:-The „George Ciprian” theatre.-The „Vasile Voiculescu”public library.- A number of Colleges and high schools: „B.P. Hasdeu”College, „Spiru Haret”pedagogical college, „Mihai Eminescu”college, etc.-The History Musem.- Many beautiful orthodox churches and monasteries which beside their religious and spiritual purpose also shelter historical and cultural documents and artefacts.- The Olimpic Swimming pool.- The professional Choir called “Lyra”, winner of many international music festivals.

“George Emil Palade” School was founded on the 15th of September 1968. At the beginning the school had 26 classes: 14 primary and 12 secondary.Nowadays the school has got 1084 pupils in 43 classes: 21 primary and 22 secondary.

Our pupils come from families with various economical, social and cultural backgrounds. That’s why it is sometimes difficult to achieve a certain cohesion and efficiencyof the educational act.Obvously due to the economic crisis the number of children who come from poorerfamilies is increasing. There is also a number of children whohave their parents at work abroad and they are left to be looked after by theirgrandparents, relatives or even neighbours.

There are 64 teachers in our school.21 of them teach the primary classes and 43teach various subjects (Romanian language and literature, Maths, Geography, History, ForeignLanguages, Art, Physical Education, Technology,Biology, Computer Studies, Music, ReligiousEducatin, Physics, Chemistry) at the secondary classes.All of them are qualified teachers, dedicated to their job.

Pupils from “G.E.Palade”school won numerousprizes and medals in various contests and school competitions. Even if we talk about sports, art or literary competitions, our pupilshave shown their talent and their abilities.This is not the first Comenius project in which our school is involved. We participated in other two multilateral project and one bilateral project. -2001-2004 “COLOUR, FORM, MATERIAL”partners: Germany, Great Britain, Poland,The Netherlands.
