Description: Turning Point is a design-build project intended to provide a gathering area for the North Carolina Museum of Art. The concrete wall extends out of the ground are raises to its full height of 13 feet. The deck extends from the wall out to the pond.

Description: This bas relief model emphasizes the connections the roads make and the layers of land change over time. Copper: the roads as the foundation of the city and the link between land. Wood: the water rather than the land forming a negative figure ground depiction. Plexiglass: etched with the growth of the city. Pegs: building sizes. The overall theme is relationships.

Description: This abstraction of a museum is informed by the interconnection of a Wall of Light, a Wall of Books, a Volume of Line, and a Volume of Center to create dynamic paths. The subtractive form of the surrounding buildings lead to the carving out of the walls and volumes. The Wall of Light is an overhead screen created from a grid diagram developed in the previous precinct study.

Description: This design is inspired by the repetition of music notes and is thus about the alignment of the repetitive shapes of the buildings. From the site, the form was shaped by the manmade and natural edges. A view framed by two trees also influenced the form and orientation. The approach is about overhead thresholds and goals. Each time you go up the stairs, one is rewarded with a view of the lake. The clerestories and the roof slant towards the lake help bring in southern light.

Art Sculpture Center
Description: The design of this sculpture center is focused on the experiential path visitors will take through the museum. The roofing systems differentiate the program of the building. The focal gallery spaces are elongated east to west so they have the most north and south exposure, while the storage and the office spaces are on the east and west sides. Green features include PV panels, rain water collection, a rain garden, a bioswale, an orchard, pervious paving, and a useful daylighting index of almost 90% in each of the spaces. Using Climate Consultant and Daysim lead to many design decisions that improved the sustainability of the sculpture center. Climate Consultant helped identify strategies for Raleigh, and DaySim looked at the useful daylighting index.

Materials Reseach
Description: Dr. Michael Dickey has been researching a self-folding paper process and my partner and I became interested in its application in architecture. Pre-stressed plastic shrinks when subject to heat, so the black lines absorb more the heat causing the plastic to “bend.” My partner and I have started by looking into forms and limitations and will continue to explore incorporating this material into a building as a dynamic feature. Professor: Dana GullingLocation: NC State, Raleigh, NCDescription: The main themes behind this addition to the College of Design are the axes of the site and the structure grid. The building is split into two pieces that frame a “street” that allows one to look into studio spaces. The street is intended to help integrate the College of Design with students throughout NC State. The two pieces slope in the opposite directions because one side of site is a story lower. The wall section is a typical section of second story porch. The detail is of the turned brick rain screen fronting a curtain wall.
