PARISH MINISTRIES AND ACTIVITIES
CATHOLIC APPEAL 2014
Thanks to the many parishioners who
pledged to the Catholic Appeal last
weekend during our in-pew solicitation, as well as to those
prior donors who had previously responded to the mailing they
received. Through your support of this Appeal, our parish
community follows Pope Francis' encouragement "to go for-
ward in hope" as we support the ministries that bring to life the
Gospel message across the Archdiocese of Boston. If you
have yet to make a pledge to the 2014 Appeal, please complete
a pledge form available in the booklet rack in the foyer of the
church or visit BostonCatholicAppeal.org to donate
online. Thank you for your prayers and support.
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
On the Frist Sunday of Lent (March 9th) Katherine, our parish catechumen (an unbaptized person formally preparing to receive the
Sacraments of Initiation) will be received as a catechumen/elect by Cardinal O’Malley at a ceremony celebrated at the Cathedral of
the Holy Cross. A rite sending her to the cathedral for the Rite of Election will be celebrated at the 11:00 A.M. Mass this weekend.
The Lenten Season is the forty day period during which catechumens make their proximate preparation for full initiation into the
Church at the Easter vigil service. It is also the period during which we the baptized prepare ourselves to renewal our own baptismal
commitment at the Easter Feast.
Beginning March 12th and on all the Wednesdays of Lent
(except March 26th) from 6:30-8:00pm, St. Eulalia and all the
parishes and chapels of the Archdiocese of Boston will be open
for individual confession. The archdiocese has set up a website,
www.TheLightIsOnForYou.org, to help you prepare. It has vid-
eos on the Sacrament of Reconciliation, sheets on how to make a
good confession, answers to frequently-asked questions and
more. Please make plans to come on Lenten Wednesdays and
spread the word of this special outreach of mercy to those you
know.

EVANGELIZATION CORNER
From Rev. Robert Rivers’ book
From Maintenance to Mission:
After Jesus returned to heaven, he and the archangel Gabriel
were talking. Jesus still bore the marks of his crucifixion.
Gabriel said, “Master, you must have suffered horribly!
Does everyone know and appreciate how much you loved
them and what you did for them?”
Jesus replied, “Oh no, not yet. Right now only a few people
know.”
Gabriel was perplexed. “Then what have you done to let
people know about your love?”
Jesus answered, “I have asked Peter, James, Mary, and
John, and a few other friends to tell people about me. Those
who are told will tell others, until the last man and the last
woman in the farthest corners of the earth will have heard
my story. They will know about my life, death, and resur-
rection. They will know of my love for them.”
Gabriel frowned and looked rather skeptical. “Yes, but
what if Peter and the others grow weary? What if the peo-
ple who come after them forget? Surely you have made oth-
er plans?”
Jesus said: “Gabriel, I have no other plans. I am counting
on them.”

LENTEN PRACTICES
ASH WEDNESDAY, March 5, 2014, and GOOD FRIDAY, April
18, 2014, are days of fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS OF LENT are
also days of abstinence.
FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who
have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full
meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength,
may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they
should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not
permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.
ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On
days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or
ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not
oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish
priest should be consulted.
MARIAN MILE
Join us in church as we pray the Rosary. We meet
on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
evenings at 7:30pm. This is a great way to exercise spiritually.
When the weather improves, we will resume our walks outside
through the Prayer Garden.

their experiences with one another in a caring and supportive
atmosphere. No fee, but voluntary donation appreciated to

wells and foyer. They will be distributed to food pantries. If
you prefer to contribute by check, please make the check paya-
ble to St. Eulalia Parish and mark “Food” in the memo.
Checks or cash should be placed in an envelope marked

FOOD DRIVE
Next weekend, March 15-16, our parish is
holding its monthly food drive. Please leave
food bags in the stairwell on the Pepper Hill
side of the church. Checks payable to St. Eu-
lalia or cash should be left in an envelope marked “Food”
and placed in the OSR box. This month the food will be
allocated to Project SOUP. Last month’s collection to St.
Matthew’s Food Pantry resulted in 58 bags of nonperisha-
ble goods and a sum of money. Your generous support of
our Food Ministry Program is deeply appreciated.
EASTER BASKETS FOR THE
HOMELESS
Again this year we will be constructing
Easter baskets for adults and children for
two homeless shelters of the Somerville
Homeless Coalition. This project is a great way to get the
children in the parish involved in a community service pro-
ject for Lent. Here is how you and your children can
help:
Starting March 5 (Ash Wednesday) through Sunday,
April 13th there will be a collection tub in the foyer of
the church for any toiletry items for adults and children
such as shampoo and conditioner; bath gels/liquid body
wash; lotions; soap; toothbrushes; toothpaste; razors;
shaving cream; lip balm; deodorant; dental floss and/or
traditional basket fare you may wish to purchase,
Donate a small denomination gift card that can be used
to purchase items needed for the baskets. Gift cards to
CVS, Target, Dunkin Donuts, etc. are welcome. Place
any gift card donations in the OSR boxes or bring them
to the Parish Office,
Come to Manion Hall on Wednesday, April 16th at
3:30pm to help construct the baskets with the commit-
tee. Children must be accompanied by a parent/
guardian; this is not a drop-off activity,
If you would rather make a cash donation, please make
checks payable to St. Eulalia Church, in the memo on
the check write “Easter Baskets” drop it in the OSR box
or bring it to the Parish Office. Any funds collected will
go either to purchase items needed for the baskets or be
given directly to the Somerville Homeless Coalition. If
you have any questions, please contact Christina Hurley
(ccehurley@rcn.com or 781-643-2066) .

OPERATION RICE BOWL
Operation Rice Bowl, a Lenten project sponsored by Catholic
Relief Services, is an opportunity to identify with and assist
the poor in this country and overseas. The program has four
components: prayer, fasting, education, and almsgiving. We
encourage you to take home a Rice Bowl container and a home
calendar guide. Both items are to be found in the church foy-
er. Let our Lenten spirituality be rooted in solidarity with peo-
ple everywhere, especially with the poor. Rice Bowls should
be returned at the Holy Thursday Liturgy, when it is suggested
that “there be a procession of the faithful with gifts for the
poor.”
IT WOULD BE MOST HELPFUL TO THE
OFFICE if you would count any coin in the Rice
Bowl, round it up, and replace the coin with paper
money or a check to St. Eulalia indicating “Rice
Bowl” in the memo section.. Thank you.
