What is aquaculture?

Production of aquatic animals and plants where at least one phase of the life-cycle

is controlled

Over 30 species are commercially cultured in Hawai`i

Rationale

• U.S. imports 80% of its seafood• > 50% of all seafood consumed is farmed• World aquaculture production increasing

~15-20% annually• Hawai`i aquaculture annual value ~$37 million

($25 million production, $12 million research and technology)

• Demand for non-food products growing rapidly (pharmaceuticals, pearls, food additives)

Pubic Information (includes some business clients)- response to first inquiries (consultation, referrals)- information initiative

- workshop series- newsletter- web site and browsing shelf materials

Research and Development- response to business needs, wishes- demonstrations of appropriate technology- research, education initiatives

Academic and Public Service- review manuscripts, proposals- mentor, speak to community groups
