The Centurion ARV (Armoured Recovery Vehicle –FV4006) is a Centurion battle tank with the turretand armament replaced by winch equipment so thatimmobilised vehicles can be retrieved from thebattlefield. Protection for the crew of 4 and thewinch is provided by an armour plate compartmentwelded to the top of the hull with a vision cupolaand access doors.

The winch engine is a 135 bhp Rolls-Royce B80petrol engine which drives a generator giving power

to the electric winch motor. The external recoveryequipment includes a spade type ground anchor atthe rear. Provision is also made for mounting a jibeither on the spade or at the front of the vehicle.

During the production run 330+ Centurion ARVswere built. The Mark 1 was produced fromconverted Centurion Mk 1-3 hulls whereas the Mark2 was built from new. The Centurion ARV enteredservice in 1955 and was retired from the BritishArmy when Chieftain came into service.

The User Handbook is in English and comprises 158 pages giving user operating and servicing detailsfor the Centurion Recovery Vehicle variant. It is the companion volume to AFV-008 Centurion Mk 3,5 &6 User Handbook which covers the basic vehicle. There is a section covering winch engine faultdiagnosis, a servicing schedule and there are 69 monochrome illustrations including vehicle wiring andstowage diagrams.
