Introduction Accidents are quite

common on Indian Roads. According to figures by the

Road Safety Cell of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, there were 4,97,686 accidents in 2011; 1,42,485 were killed.

Moreover with the rapid urbanization, India has seen an un-precedent growth of motor vehicles.

.

National Highway accounted for 31.3 % of total road accidents and 37.1 % of total no. of persons killed in 2011.

State highway accounted for 24.6 % of total accident and a share of 27.4% in the total no. of persons killed in road accident in 2011.

Highways permit greater speed resulting in relatively greater no. of road accidents and fatalities.

Reason Behind Accidents Safety studies have found that a majority of accidents occur due to

the driver's error . The negligence of the safety norms. Driver fatigue, drunken driving are some other reasons of the

mishaps. The actions like dangerous overtaking, lane cutting, jumping of

signals, erratic parking can be counted as major causes for the calamities on the roads.

Usually, accidents are prevalent in urban cities where "Speed" of the vehicles is uncontrollable and where each and every individual is in hurry.

Private vehicles get struck in the local roads while the commercial vehicle accidents are prevalent on highways.

Buses are one more player. Many bus tyres get exploded. while most accidents occur because they do not use dim headlights.

Actions for road safety What governments can do..? Make road safety a political priority. Institutional development. Appoint a lead agency for road safety, give it adequate

resources, and make it publicly accountable. Develop a multi-disciplinary approach to road safety. Set appropriate road safety targets and establish national

road safety plans to achieve them. Create budgets for road safety and increase investment

in demonstrably effective road safety activities.

. The officers of highway police should be empowered to

book offenders for over speeding, wrong overtaking and negligent driving.

The geometric design of the road should be audited from road safety angle.

The road center line marking on 2 lane roads should be maintained in good condition always. This will certainly reduce accidents.

A concerted advertising and education campaign may be taken up to educate the drivers about the importance of compliance of road signs particularly like speed limits and no overtaking zones.

An Intelligent Traffic system can not only relieve Indian roads from heavy congestion issues, but it also helps to enforce road safety rules in a more efficient manner.

Goals for the next 5 years

Increase the awareness of road user education and the traffic safety problem in India.

Improve the road conditions in rural and urban areas. Decrease the number of accidents related to drinking drivers. Implementing traffic education in schools for children. Change of system in issuing the licence and training of the

drivers. Improve the technical equipment used in traffic systems. Strong organisation of transportation enggineering

deapartment for the traffic safety. Ban of old vehicles which are not in proper conditions. Some changes in the traffic systems and traffic rules as per the

population growth and as the situation varies.

Toll Tax

Problems with policy Unauthorized collection of money.

Distance between two toll plaza’s.

Regarding toll booth locations on highways, toll rate is work out on per km rate hence does not matter what is distance between two toll plazas on same road.

It is to be consider only when two toll road crosses each other.

There should be planning from whole to part while developing the national highways.

Government shall find a second option

Government shall be eliminate all toll plaza and for repayments government increase a road taxations.

This will save time, petrol, diesel, and gas consumption.

When we consider every day in India 3,00,000 vehicle stop for minimum ½ minute on toll plaza that means we lost 1,50,000 working minutes.

Toll plaza’s are also a hub of corruption.

Improvement in Toll Policy Concessions to local traffic/ frequent travellers. Categories of persons/vehicles to be exempted

from fee. Toll gates on access roads to check avoidance of

toll. Separate rate for peak and off- peak hours. Unauthorised collection of User Charges. Distance between two toll plaza’s. Rate of fee for overloading. Smart card policy for vehicles which is helpful to

stop an unauthorized collection money.

Improvements in Road Policy Government shall be make a digitalize data

collection of all vehicles all over India.

When a vehicle get punished by highway police, the data entry will be compulsory.

This system give a proper information of every vehicle and about drivers.

Compulsory navigation system for all vehicles.

What Common People Think About NH Service….? After every 50km

Dhaba, Washroom open by the State Tourism Ministry for improvement in Tourism.

This is very helpful for Travellers.

The Dhaba banned for alcohol in all around NH in India.

After every 25 km Ambulance, Crain, First -Aid , and Police patrolling service available.

This secure the NH traffic.

Green Corridor around NH On every NH Road

compulsory tree plantation program on National Level.

Reduces the effect of carbon dioxide.

Help for green revolution in India.

“ Government Driving School ” There shall be a government driving school in all

over the India in every district. A person who pass the driving course from

government driving school shall be given a loan and subsidy on purchasing a vehicle.

The people have habit of driving on right side of four lane highways.

Government shall give a social messages on electronic media regarding to the road safety.

Help shall be rewarded Now a days anyone give accident report and get

troubles, because of this people does not help the injured people.

Every accident reporter shall be honored and rewarded for humanity, with certificate and some discount in taxation.

Some Little Steps…! For heavy vehicle driving the age limit shall not

more than 70 years. All old vehicle more than 20 years will be replaced

in rural area’s. The helmet shall be compulsory on every roads in

India. The milk and vegetables frozen vehicles shall be

promoted.

Some improvements in law…? Outdated penalty structure practiced in the capital of India

is one of the main reasons why offenders are not deterred from flouting road safety rules. When a single person caught by police in drunk and drive

case more than 3 times , his driving licence will be discharge and no more licence approved on his name.

This will decrease the drunk and driving cases. The penalty on drunk and drive case, overload, over speed

case will be increase and a non criminal case will be charged with 24 hour arrest to the driver.

Government shall promote a NGO’s , School, Colleges for road safety.

The tragic loss of Union rural development minister Late Shree. Gopinath Munde in a car accident emphasises the abysmal state of road safety in India.

What Happen with Late Shree Munde’s Car

Many of these losses are completely avoidable. The accident involving Munde was caused by bad road design, the minister's car hit at an intersection where a road connecting at a tangent obscures approaching vehicles from view. Within the capital itself, traffic experts have identified at least 10 such crossings where traffic density meets design flaw producing a toxic mix.

This can be immediately corrected by placing warning signs and well-located reflector mirrors enabling holistic views. But Munde's accident emphasises how no authority has begun implementing road safety with the seriousness this needs.

Conclusion There is a need to undertake experimental studies on drunk and driving

for correct assessment of traffic safety situation on Indian roads.

Professionalism in driver training and advanced licensing system and some strict law will help to decrease the accidents.

Vehicles GPS and GIS facilities with unique user id will help to improve the identification of vehicles involved in road accidents.

This points will be use to improve the current situation of road safety and management in India.
