Well, you have moved a great many times, but this is the last place on God' s earth to bring a woman and little
children," Jane Silcock said to her husband, Thomas, the first morning she woke after moving to Riverton the
night before. It was 1865. It had been dark as they arrived in Riverton and this was Jane' s first impression that
morning as she looked around the area that was to become her new home. She and Thomas had moved to
Riverton with their eight children and another on the way. Like people before them and many people after them,
Thomas and Jane went to work to make Riverton a beautiful place to live.
How would Jane feel if she woke up this morning and looked around the city? I am sure she would have mixed
emotions. No doubt, she would like some of the things she saw, but she would be concerned about other
changes. She would probably marvel at the many conveniences we have in life, but miss some of the old-
fashioned ways of doing things. However, she would soon discover that what she saw was not as important as
the people living here. Just like in 1865, today it is the people who make the difference. As Riverton' s population
has increased drastically over the last 150 years, it is not the physical structures that make Riverton a great
place to live. It is the wonderful people who call Riverton home. Two such people are Norma Bench and Colleen
Van Wagoner. These two women moved to Riverton almost fifty years ago, and like thousands of other people,
they have been hard working volunteers for the city. As a team, for many years, these two women faithfully
worked all day long in the information booth at Town Days. Norma and Colleen, thank you for your service!
People like you make our city a better place to live. It was an honor for Norma and Colleen to serve as the
Grand Marshalls in our July 1st Town Day's parade.
Be aware of the people who are doing things to make life better for you in Riverton. Give them a big smile, andlet them know that this is a great place to live — thanks to them. Volunteerism is not dead in Riverton! There are
thousands of people, like you, who do so much to help our city be a better place.
Thank you for all you do.

Fun, food, and fireworks are what July is all about! While you' re enjoying the holiday celebrations with your
friends and family, keep these suggestions in mind for maintaining clean neighborhoods, streets, creeks and
rivers, as well as personal safety. Sweep the gutter clear of any yard maintenance debris that fall during yard
work rather than using a garden hose. This will conserve water, and keep debris out of rivers and creeks.
Immediately following the fireworks party, sweep the fireworks from roads, sidewalks, and driveways and put
them into a bucket with water. Fireworks left in the streets, gutters and driveways can end up in our creeks andrivers.
Try putting a small board on your front lawn and do the stationary fireworks there. This will protect kids from the
dangers of roads and the cleanup will be easier.
