revival of the classicism of Greece and Rome in painting, sculpture, architecture and furniture
reaction against the frivolous and excessive style of the Rococo
-Newly founded Americas also adopted a Classic style-Classic influence in the paintings and sculptures as well as the architecture
-Spanish artist-similar to the Romantics in some ways but his unique view on society and its corruption inspired him to use unique techniques to portray his subjects
Romanticism
-found inspiration in the art of the Medieval and Baroque periods-looked to the culture and art of the Middle and Far East-known for rich colour in their works along with -unrestrained emotions-used very focused bright light in their works and often had a brushy technique that gave their works a sense of movement and energy
-occurs during the same period as Neoclassicism and Romanticism-previous “realistic” work tended to idealize and sensationalize their subjects-artists tried to show the world as they really experienced it, no alterations-only what they could see and touch was represented
