COVER STORY
BE YOUR OWN BOSS
As Director -SCIT I am glad to write the first welcome note for “Reflections“.
Although at its heart SCIT is about academic and intellectual pursuits, the residential
campus takes all management students of SCIT to immerse in extracurricular activities
that happen outside the classroom. The stage plays and skits by Eklavya, discussions at
Drishtikon, lectures by corporate experts arranged by GL committees, events to
encourage entrepreneurship by ITELF, activities for the society by SSR, the gala event of
SCIT - Graffiti and many more cannot be ignored while defining life at SCIT.
When I take a stroll at the faculty lounge, I many a time see faculty members busy
working on journal papers, researching conference presentations, redrafting papers for
sharing it at Prowess and Quest and sometimes glued on to their desk top looking for
secondary data and statistics. SCIT is about the creation of new knowledge and the
interpretation and transfer of existing knowledge. The faculty members do it very well.
Although many of these are captured in the website, there is no single place where all this
information is available and this was pointed out by some SCITians, and hence
“Reflections” took its birth. “Reflections” is a magazine of SCIT completely managed by
SCITians. “Reflections” intends to update SCIT fraternity and its stake holders with the
latest happenings in SCIT. This monthly magazine would cover the events and news
across SCIT from the different clubs of SCIT along with the latest event and sporting
activities.
I wish “Reflections” a very long journey and sincerely hope that the readers would enjoy
reading it as much as the student team enjoyed writing, designing and producing it.

FACULTY CORNER RENDEZVOUS
Abhay Patodi & Abhishek Dutta Interviewed Dr. Dhanya Pramod (Our Beloved Dhanya Ma’am)
Abhay: Ma’am can you tell us about your experience at SCIT. How did you start and how you went on to become the Deputy Director?
Abhishek: What is one special thing you like about SCIT?
Ma’am: I was doing my PhD at Symbiosis during 2006-‐09.During that me, I had interacted with the previous Director of SCIT, Shaila Kagal Ma’am. She used to be there during my intermediate PhD presenta ons. So, I used to get lots of inputs from her. When I thought of changing my job, first op on of SCIT came to me because of my interac on with Kagal Ma’am. With the kind of mo va on she had given, I thought SCIT would provide me a good environment to work. My interview was taken by Anil Vaidya Sir, who was the then Director of SCIT. By the me I joined, Anil Sir had le ….Rajni Gupte Ma’am was the officia ng Director for a couple of months. A er that, Raman Sir joined; Pradnya Ma’am was the ac ng Deputy Director at that me. She was doing her PhD then, and hence she had a lot of administra ve
work to take care off. She wanted to get relieved of some of the administra ve work. As a result, she requested Sir to relieve her from the post and hand over the responsibili es to some other person. In the meanwhile, Pradnya Ma’am was on leave for a month and I was the ac ng Deputy Director for that period. Finally a er 4-‐5 months of joining SCIT, I became the deputy director

FACULTY CORNER RENDEZVOUS
Abhishek: How do you maintain a balance between your personal and professional life?
Abhay: If not a professor, what would you like to have been?
Abhay: Any message you would like to give to the students of SCIT.
Ma’am: The main thing I would say is the culture. Also, I would say that the students are very well behaved. Somehow, I find that discipline is one thing that we need not impose on the students out here. Also, half of the students come from professional background, so what I find is students out here have be er maturity level than those in similar ins tu ons. It is easy to handle them as their understanding level is high.
Ma’am: (laughs)… It’s a very good question. Definitely, I would have been
a researcher
Ma’am: Hmm….well the first thing that I should tell is that my parents were also working. My mother used to come during weekends. I was brought up by father and grandmother ll I was 11 years. From the childhood only, I developed the feeling that I should become independent when I grow up. I also had to adjust a bit. What I feel is, whatever I missed during my childhood, is what my children shouldn’t miss now. I’ve never been too harsh to them, but at the same me ensuring that they maintain discipline. I devote adequate me to them. So, I hardly take work home. Even there is some extra work some extra work; I make sure that I finish it off here itself.

Ma’am: Well, I would like to advise them on what to focus on, during their career. Now, people are more focussed areas, where they can easily find in a job, more than their interest area. They actually grab the areas where opportunities are available. That is not the right attitude. It may happen that a few years, students might not feel great while working in that area.
Abhay & Abhishek : Thank You Ma’am for your me , it was a privilege for us
Ma’am : you’re welcome (smiles).
In the recently held PhD Entrance Examination (PET) of SIU, our faculty member, Prof Anuradha Goswami has cleared the entrance and also got
through into the course by clearing the succeeding presentation and viva voce.

Cover Story Evonix Technologies
They say big companies start with humble beginnings. A lot of big companies like Apple, Amazon and HP were all started in a garage. These companies were not backed up by huge investments but by the sheer determination of its founders. Well, the ‘Head
Quarters’ of Evonix is the Proof of Concept (POC) Lab at SCIT, is far from being like a garage in terms of comfort and ambience. In fact, the lab could easily qualify for one
of the most conducive spaces. It may look like a good start for a start-up then, but that doesn’t make this entrepreneurial journey any less comforting. Evonix Technologies is a company started by the entrepreneur trio of Mubaid Syed, Niladri Shekhar Roy and Chandra Vardhan, students of MBA 2011-13 batch of SCIT.

In a short span of 4-5 months, Evonix Technologies has made huge progress as a company, by providing consulting services & IT Solutions to about 8-10 big clients and launching ColorSplash.in as an online customized T-shirt e-commerce business.
The Slow Beginning
The start was not as smooth as expected.
The first and the basic problem was the capital money. No business can start without any investment and the founders had ZERO capital to start with.
ColorSplash needed investment. The
revenues from Evonix Technologies were used to invest in ColorpSplash. Evonix Technologies was formed in October 2011 with constant motivation and support from DR. R. Raman, Director - SCIT. Before that both the founders Mubaid and Niladri used to take up projects as freelancers.
When they met and worked together in the 1st year of MBA, they realized a common passion and formed bonding among themselves. This resulted in converting their part time hobby of web development into full-fledged business. After the huge success of Why this Kolaveri di Video, shot for SCIT promotion the two came to know that there
is one more brain itching guy like them – Chandra Vardhan. Thus the team was formed but with assignments and classes to attend, the growth of the company was very slow and there was no road map to go ahead.

The Eureka Moment
Every business is backed up by an idea. Even though you have a great idea but its actual worth is known only when you start implementing it. “Designing is my passion,
so along with the IT solutions we should do something which has great market opportunity and gives a chance to build my passion. Being involved in a lot of activities of college, we observed that there were several clubs and events of colleges and each wanted to establish their own identity. Each of these would come up with their own customized T-Shirt to represent themselves.
Students contacted local vendors, quality differed every time and there was total
chaos” says Mubaid. “What others saw as a problem, we saw it as a business
opportunity which has a great scope for evolving as a online t-shirt selling brand” adds Niladri. So the three zeroed in on the idea and named it “ColorSplash.in”

The First Bold Step- Choosing the Path Less Travelled
Like everyone else, the trio also started preparing for Internship interviews for companies coming to college and they had offers from reputed companies. But still the zeal of doing something on their own tickled their brains. After a lot of brain-storming and interacting with seniors, alumni etc they decided to utilize the internship period for starting their venture. “It is better to try and fail rather than wonder for the rest of my
life what it would have been if I had tried it? And we did not want that and hence opted out of the Internship process” quotes Mubaid. When the same thing was conveyed by
the Director, he was indeed very happy and extended all the support needed to encourage these young entrepreneurs.
Arrival of the Sleepless Nights
Although they have learned the importance of a proper business plan and financial planning, the trio had everything except the proper business plan. Instead of spending time on making business models, delivery models and financial planning, they just jumped right into the waters.
Looking at the creative and impressive work they had done earlier for college and as freelancers, Dr. R. Raman shared few contacts. It was not difficult to convert them into
deals. The projects at Evonix Technologies range from Website Development, Mobile Application Development, Creative Designs and Online Marketing. Mubaid and Niladri were good in programming and designing so they started working on the projects while Chandra started handling all the operations and communication area.
The 1st Major Breakthrough
The 1st big client was Thomson Press, an ‘India Today’ Group of company (One of the
top 5 largest printing press in Asia). They wanted an MIS Application for their Delhi setup and Evonix Tech. agreed to provide Consulting Services to them. So, Team Evonix went to Delhi and stayed there for 15 days to help Thomson Press in
Architectural Design, Database Development of entire application and provided technical training to staff along with development support to their team. “It was a great

experience as we got to train the employees who had an average experience of 12 years in Industry” says Chandra.
The ‘Color Splash’ Journey
ColorSplash.in which started as a passion was a difficult business than Evonix. Unlike Evonix Tech., ColorSplash required capital money and knowledge of textile industry. “We didn’t even have money to open a Current Account for our business and had to borrow money from a friend”, says Niladri. They started by hosting a few T-shirts designs on the website. “We were not really sure about the orders so decided to just
create the website. After a few weeks of the website being created the orders started coming in” adds Niladri.
The next hurdle for the trio was to set up a reliable supply chain in place. They had to find a suitable T-shirt manufacturer who could offer them T-shirts at best prices. For this they did intensive research, figured out the major textile hubs in India and even went ahead to visit many places. Then Evonix Technologies collaborated with DTDC courier services for taking care of shipping and tracking of t-shirts, meanwhile Mubaid
and Niladri integrated the payment gateway on the ColorSplash website. The website was fully functional and ready to take orders.
But you can’t expect sales without any marketing. The young entrepreneurs applied many marketing fundas they had learned in their academics. After thorough market research and competitor analysis, they decided that the only way to topple competitors like inkfruit.com and bewkoof.com is to employ the ‘best-price’ strategy, and with the supply chain optimization they could reduce costs and price the creatively designed t-
shirts very competitively. The problem of almost no human resources in the company was tackled by hiring interns from different colleges for 2-3 months period; this not
only reduced costs for Evonix, but actually turned out to be a great learning experience for the interns. Amazing how the three who were seeking internships a few months back actually ended up giving internships to other students from IITs, NITs, and BITS Pilani and even from a University of France for marketing and sales purpose.

Looking at the dedication and concept of his friends, Chintan Sanghvi of 2011-13 batch finished his internship in other company quickly and joined the trio to help them. After his entry it became easier for the trio to manage the work. They went to graduation and post-graduation colleges, sent out e-mailers and also utilized the power of Social Media for creating awareness and ‘buzz’ about ColorSplash. One such social media marketing campaign, the ‘Batman T-Shirt design’
contest, gained immense attention and generated huge traction for the website. The contest was intentionally launched around the dates of release of the mega Batman
flick ‘TDKR’. It attracted entries from more than 10 countries and 70+ different designs, and with close to 4000 likes on their Facebook page, ColorSplash was quickly becoming a brand in itself. The dream of 3 young men was slowly turning into reality; a sustaining business
model, with the likes of IIIT-H, Tender Leaves, NIT Rourkela and British Telecom as their esteemed clientele. Not only this, ColorSplash t-shirts are now featured on SnapDeal.com, Junglee.com (Amazon) and eBay.in and lots of other major players are also in talks. But ColorSplash is not the only sustaining business under the widening umbrella of Evonix Technologies. They have done many projects that consist of
Website Designing and Deployment, providing E-Commerce Solutions and developing Mobile Applications. They have also done SEO and Online Marketing for many reputed organizations like ThomsonPress, HitsYouLike.com, YogaGuru.com and our very own SCIT. On being asked “How do you manage so many things with MBA academics? “. Mubaid says, “Well, coding has always been a passion for me, and the amazing feeling of getting to be my own boss, and tasting success by realizing a long-time dream of having my own company keeps me motivated.”

The Road Ahead
The terrific trio have ambitious future plans for Evonix Technologies. With many creative ideas and innovative strategies, they plan to establish the brand ColorSplash as a major t-shirt provider among the college student fraternity and e-commerce market. They have growth plans on the other business lines of Evonix as well, such as, Website
Design and Deployment, IT consulting and Mobile Applications Development. “Well, the entire batch is going in one direction and we three are pursuing the other; sometimes it’s exciting and sometimes it’s scary, but we are determined and committed to fulfil our dream” says Chandra. The Entrepreneurs of SCIT have now become a
source of inspiration for many of their batch-mates. The Entrepreneurs of SCIT have

Based on their motto, the students of SCIT’s MBA-ITBM 2009-2011 batch started Student Social Responsibility club (SSR) in 2009.
Every new batch that enters this prestigious institution has carried on this onus with great concern and objectivity to promote it, not only within the institute’s
boundaries but even to the outside world. Already SCIT SSR since its inception two
years back has been associated with a lot of NGO’s and corporate houses in its initiatives.
This year the “Enlightening Baton” was passed on to 2011-13 batch who have already chalked out plans as to how they will try to assist the society in a much more
sustainable way rather than just spreading the word of awareness, because, everyone believes that “Actions speak louder than Words”. And what could have been a better way to start the journey, other than carrying out a well-crafted “Induction Program” on
Aug 13th, 2012 for the newly inducted batch of 2012-2014, thus leaving an indelible imprint on their minds regarding this great initiative’s noble cause.
To make the event more interactive, participants were asked to prepare paper bags from the waste material available around, sketch and enact a play on any social issues, chalk out a plan of events that
would be conducted on a day trip to any orphanage

The event was presided over by honourable SCIT Director, Dr. R. Raman, who in a pertinent way adorably blended the genesis of the club along
with the mission, vision and motivation behind the initiative. He also adroitly explained how socially and professionally beneficial it can prove to
everyone associated and the society on a whole. His words that described SSR were “ I
didn’t see any one working as hard as these members of SSR to make this program as strong and socially bound, but not for the benefits of oneself, instead for the benefit of the society”. The event was also addressed by Prof. SVK Bharathi and Prof. Sadhana Ghalsasi who have always been supportive of the club and have always willingly participated in many of the activities held by SSR.

Eklavya endorses the fact that creativity cannot be the bastion of a few individuals. More the number of people, more suggestions, better plays. Hence the tag line- Open Source Nautanki...!!!! Eklavya 4.0 – team of management students from 2011-13 batch showcased their tremendous acting skills via magical MIME performance at SCIT Foundation day followed by stupendous street play at the time of the introduction of Eklavya 5.0. The talent of the group was there to be seen and justifies the laurels that they have won over the last year. Spurred by the performance of the senior batch, the 2012-14 batch were eager to prove their metal. The response for the Eklavya 5.0 was overwhelming. Each participant had to go through various rounds of screening. There were 2-3 levels of screening activities where participants
were asked to perform on randomly given topics. The way some of the participants performed was really appreciating. After two days of auditions, the final list Eklavya 5.0 was announced. Congratulations to all the selected members, main coordinators of Eklavya 4.0 Deeksha and Niladri and the entire Eklavya 4.0 for putting up such a wonderful act.

“IT in Banking” was the buzz
word as a very enthusiastic session
commenced in the SIU auditorium
on 12th August, 2012.
This affair was planned in a very
interesting manner, with the two guests enacting an on-stage
question- answer session among themselves.
Mr. Gerela played the role of the CEO while Mr. Eppaturi took up the role of the IT
consultant, debating and explaining the critical issues faced by organisations like
banks, exchanges and SMEs.
Throughout this discourse, the stress was on the 3S i.e. Stability, Scalability and
Security in addition to the technological upgrades and 24X7 availability, necessary in
the banking domain.
Lots of comparative analysis was put forward by
these esteemed speakers in their own style, making
the session both entertaining and informative at the
same time. It was clearly one among the many
enthralling sessions that we had at SCIT.

A guest lecture on the topic “Internship Opportunities at Ritsumeikan University” was held at the SIU auditorium on 22nd
of August 2012. Prof. Takada, Vice Dean of International Affairs at College of
Information Science and Engineering, Ritsumeikan University, Japan
The discourse started with Prof. Tadaka briefing the audience with Ritsumeikan University, and its well organized infrastructure. He went on to inform the students, with the different courses being offered by the university and the current researches being conducted there.
The highlight of the session was a video on the research work done in the university in which researchers were shown exploring
various new-age technological platforms, including application development for devices such as the iPad and the iPhone. The students from SCIT who had an
opportunity to complete their internship at the Ritsumeikan University, shared their wonderful experience with the audience as well. Through this session, the students at SCIT, especially the juniors, got a fair understanding of the research being conducted there and the life at the campus of
Ritsumeikan.
It is to be noted that the Ritsumeikan University offers internship to students from
SCIT every year. And judging by the enthusiasm of the students this year too, the internship being offered by Ritsumeikan will have many looking forward to it with high hopes.

NIGHT were terribly shocked and grieved. That’s when a bunch of us decided that this
magnum opus star needs a special tribute!
The gathering was held at the open air auditorium just outside the dining hall. Prior to
this, a lot of arrangement was made – starting with the selection of the best songs of
Kaka, as he was called affectionately, to creating a Facebook event and inviting
everyone. Among the ones who were to perform, it was a motley crew of singers, a
percussionist, a guitarist and a few enthusiasts who had the songs on the tip of their
tongues.
Finally the evening began! Though it was the month of July, the rain gods showed
mercy and the weather was fantastic. We kicked off the event with peppy songs like
Zindagi ek safar hain suhaana, Jai Jai Shivshankar, Gulaabi aankhen and the evergreen Mere sapno ki rani had the crowd going crazy on their feet. Even folks who were unaware of the magic of Rajesh Khanna were jubilant and dancing in the open
air! The percussionist with his fingers rollicking on the tabla was in perfect sync with
the zany guitarist. Slowly we drifted the mood towards more romantic songs – songs
like O mere dil ke chain, Hume tumse pyaar kitna elevated the mood of the crowd to a higher level. Since it was an open air event, folks from other colleges such as SIIB and
SCMHRD also started pooling in. The area around the dining hall and the sitting area
around was jam packed by the time, SCITians started off with some poignant and heart
wrenching songs. Kuch toh log kahenge and Zindagi ke safar mein made the crowd sit
back and ponder over things of the mind.
The event was nearing its end.. And the song had to be Zindagi kaisi hain paheli from Anand, one of the finest movies ever made in Indian cinema. This got the whole crowd
swinging in unison, everyone remembering what a great actor they are going to miss!
Some folks became so emotional that they started crying. But then, Kaka hates
tears!
Babumoshai, hum toh rangmanch ki kathputliyan hain jiski dor uss upar wale ke haathon main hai. Kab, kaun, kaise uthega ye koi nahin janta..

SCIT FOUNDATION DAY
OPENING SPEECH
SKIT
DANCE PRESENTATIONS
SONG PERFORMANCES
meticulously planned and well organized by the college management, staff and
students.
The institute’s esteemed director, Dr. R. Raman, presided over the function. Let’s have
a brief look at the assortment of commotions conducted during the function –
Director Sir initiated event’s proceedings in quite
innovative manner. Rather than delivering a
routine oration, he organized a SCIT’s history
based quiz and delivered prizes to those who answered correctly. Its main agenda was
to impart lesser known facts about the college to the gathered student community.
The informative quiz session was followed by
some classic stage performances, both, by the core
MBA course seniors & juniors. Especially, the
MIME act performed by senior Eklavya (SCIT’s Dramatics Committee) members on
“Addiction – The Silent Killer” was an absolutely mesmerizing performance.
The spice of the event was some engrossing
singing done by native budding vocalists, who
completely enthralled the present audience. The
SCIT’s indigenous musical band “Mantra” stole the show with their riveting audio
performance coordinated with some awesome instrumental melodies.
The surprise package of the event was a classical
Kathak dance appearance, given by institute’s
faculty Mrs Rashmi Sondriyal Gairola. After
watching this show, anyone would have easily believed the saying that “Once a
Dancer, Always a Dancer”. It was a scintillating act, coupled with some dazzling
expressions and astounding movements.
All in all, every feat was garnered with heavy praises by the spectators, who
thoroughly enjoyed the evening. After watching such ceremonies, anyone can say that
every experience in SCIT is a “Lifetime Experience”.

From a macro perspective, Finance is merely the practical application of
economics. The Financial System is the means by which an economy
allocates money to its highest valued use.
In this month DKON team with Mr.Avichal Sinha presented a Session on
"Language of Finance”. This session was aimed at covering fundamental
concepts of finance and its terminologies. This is kind of must for every
MBA Grad to be well aware of.
As students we may consider finance management as something distant from
personal life. But having a little closer look, we can realize the fact that it will
give us insights about which industries are growing at what pace, where we

can expect higher recruitments and growth and which industries recession
would hit first.
Taxes can take 40% of what we would earn. Making the right investments
can cut this tax burden. This is yet another reason to study basic terminology
of finance that can enable us to explore our further knowledge about shares,
equities, debentures etc.
Let’s participate in DKON’s interactive knowledge sharing sessions.

AUG-2012 Students’ Space BOOK REVIEW
I
In the final year of your MBA , you always crave to do best with your current life (as being an MBA student) because you know tomorrow when you step into the corporate world ,full of hassles and complication, you will not have that time which you cherish now. I made a note of this thought in my mind and came out with the things to do list, and in that list was a task to read top management books in the span of this one year. In the bookstore I was intrigued by this out of the box title “JUGAAD-INNOVATION”.
The book is written by Navi Radjou, Jaideep Prabhu & Simone
Ahuja, all three authors belonging to different fields of expertise.
The book is written by Navi Radjou, Jaideep Prabhu & Simone Ahuja, all three authors belonging to different fields of expertise. They combined their thoughts about frugal and flexible approach to innovation for the 21st century in this book. The authors look into the strategic aspects of innovation and explained their stand with current corporates like 3M , TATA , GM , SIELCO , PHILIPS , ICICI , TCS , INFOSYS , COLGATE , P&G and others.
A very prominent aspect of this book was that the authors where able to identify different stages of Innovation.

AUG-2012 Students’ Space BOOK REVIEW
It is a very interesting read for an MBA student. Although I tend to differ on some points with the authors , they had a secluded mindset about the traditional process and their standardization procedure specially SIX SIGMA, to their view point they often blamed that SIX SIGMA process don’t promote Innovation and they had exemplary examples of companies like 3M & Google. But in contrast six sigma focuses on process optimization with effective results.

Be it the pay day Wedding day or birthday Each Day is Beautiful Each day has its own aim Play it and be the winner of game Go beyond the Happiness and sadness Life is not just about these two Each day has to teach a lesson too Either we are ignored or wooed Finding out ways to make it special Giving names to days to make the memorable Friendship day, Valentine day Mother’s day, Father’s day Its way to remember the days Because each day is Beautiful As God created them to make our Lives meaningful. So live with the Spirit And learn with zeal Play with action Fight with courage Love with Feelings Each day is beautiful Get its meaning.
Sometimes I wonder! How beautiful a day can be? As I thought it can be only good or bad. Depending on whether we are happy or sad. Now I know It is better to be beautiful than to be good! And what about Bad one. But its true there is none. As no day is is good or bad. Each day is beautiful Sometimes the reason is earnings Sometimes the reason is learnings Beautiful is the day When sun shines for the first time in the morning When it sets in the evening When a girl turns to be mother When a sportsman turns out to be a winner Each day is Beautiful Even when we have fights And expect the other should make a move To make the things go right

Regular sessions are being conducted every day between 7 pm to 9 pm by volunteers to instil knowledge in little kids.
Innocent children of age 5-10 years also learned Origami. Japanese students hardly know English but humanity & friendship need no language. It was really a heart touching moment to see sparkling faces of Amar, Mayuresh, Roshni and many more kids. Kid named Amar surprised Japanese students by making Paper Frog.
JAPANESE & SCIT students with so many kids, it was looking like a Carnival. No one was there for winning or losing anything, it was a self-less, fun-filled moment that brought out child hidden in everyone.
“Important thing in photography is to have a spirit of learning and sharing” When I came to SCIT, I just had a camera “FUJIFILM S1000FD” which is really good but I was not aware of that. I didn’t even know how to manipulate the setting as required by the scenario. But after we had our SCIT Photography Club Meet on 30th Sept. 2012, many things are pretty much clear now. The

session started with Clarification of the “Megapixel Myth” that people have while buying a new camera, and the technical difference between Compact Camera and DSLR, which was taken by Ayan Hore. It was really very informative & value addition for everyone present.
Next in the session was “Basic Photography Concepts: Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO” explained by Devesh Singh & Ayan Hore which was really good, since before that I just knew these terms but didn’t know what they actually do in photography and their effects.

After that Q&A session helped us in clarifying our queries on the new concepts learnt, followed by the “Photo Viewing” session in which we came to know about the talented people in 2012-2014 Batch as well as from 2011-2013 Batch. The photograph which I really loved was - “Emotions of Cats” by “Smruti Borkar” from 2012-2014 Batch. Finally, I’d like to thank Ayan Hore, Devesh Singh
& Akash Boaz for organizing the session & we are eagerly waiting for the next session to happen. Till then trying to implement lessons learnt from this session to capture some good photographs.
