Revelation 20

Revelation 20:1-2Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,

Revelation 20

Revelation 20:3-4aand threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed.

Revelation 20

Revelation 20:4bAlso I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Revelation 20

Revelation 20:5-6The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

Revelation 20

The Millennial Kingdom (vv. 1-6)

1. When does this reign of Christ take place? - This reign is FUTURE (after Christ’s return)

2. Where will Satan be during this time?- Satan will be BOUND in the abyss

Revelation 20

John 8:44. . . there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Revelation 20

The Millennial Kingdom (vv. 1-6)

3. Is this kingdom a literal earthly kingdom OR is it a spiritual heavenly kingdom? - It will be a literal earthly kingdom!

4. Who will reign with Christ in this Kgd?

Revelation 20

Revelation 20:4aThen I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed.

Revelation 20

1 Corinthians 6:2-3Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!

3. Is this kingdom an earthly kingdom OR is it a heavenly/spiritual kingdom?- It will be an earthly kingdom!

4. Who will reign with Christ in this Kgd?- God’s people (including the

martyrs of the tribulation); all those who share in the 1st resurrection!

Revelation 20

The Millennial Kingdom (vv. 1-6)

5. What is this “first resurrection?”

Revelation 20

John 5:28-29Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Revelation 20

Revelation 20:6Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power.

Revelation 20The Final Rebellion!

Revelation 20:7-8And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea.

Revelation 20The Final Rebellion!

Revelation 20:9-10And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Interlude – The Final Rebellion (vv. 7-10)

Act 2 – The Great White Throne Judgment (vv. 11-15)

Revelation 20The Great White Throne

Judgment!

Revelation 20:11-12aThen I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.

Revelation 20The Great White Throne

Judgment!

Revelation 20:12bThen another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.

Revelation 20The Great White Throne

Judgment!

Revelation 20:13And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.

Great White Throne Judgment!

John 5:27-29And he (the Father) has given him (the Son) authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Great White Throne Judgment: The Findings?

Isaiah 64:6aWe have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment (filthy rag).

Romans 3:23 For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Great White Throne Judgment: The Sentence?

Revelation 20:14-15Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The Second Death?

“As there is a second and higher life (eternal life), so there is also a second and deeper death.

Henry Alford

And as after this second and higher life there is no more death, so after this second and deeper death there is no more life.”

For those who will experience the first resurrection – the future could

not be brighter!

1 Corinthians 15:42-44So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.

For those who will experience the first resurrection – the future could

not be brighter!

For those who will experience the resurrection of judgment and stand before Jesus Christ as He sits upon

the Great White Throne – their future could not be any more

dreadful!

“Hell is a place of punishment without pity,

misery without mercy, sorrow without sympathy,

crying without comfort, torments without end and

past imagination.”John Trapp

Revelation 20:15And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Hebrews 9:27And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.

Two options as we consider the Great White Throne Judgment . . .

Option #1 – Plan to take a stand on what we have done!

Option #2– Plan to take a stand on what Jesus Christ has done for us!

2 Corinthians 5:21For our sake he made

him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in

him we might become the

righteousness of God.
