Career Summary
My career commenced in trade and engineering and my first position was an apprentice Electrical Fitter-Mechanic and from the outset I was taught a foundation lesson by being encouraged to “Learn to Do It Right First”, as speed will come with experience. I continue to reflect and whenever pertinent pass on this
lesson because it has and continues to guide me in whatever task I undertake. On the same day I started my apprenticeship, I also commenced a part time course for a Certificate in Electrical Engineering that evening. This course became known as an Associate or Undergraduate Diploma. The equivalent status of both is recognised. I completed my Apprenticeship with honours in all subjects and over then completed my Certificate in
Electrical Engineering. Exposure gained through different workplaces bolstered my overall trade experience and provided good exposure to technician level tasks and supervisory roles. After doing a self evaluation I was comfortable with myself technically and with the success of the project work and people management I had undertaken, however I wanted to increase my exposure to a broader interaction with people, commercial dealings, higher level project management, budgeting, and more intricate
time management. This exposure was not currently available to me at trade and engineering level. My pursuit then focussed in the direction of a Technical Sales role where my experience at trade and engineering would be of value to that role. The next career opportunity eventuated and I relocated to take on a sales career in the Variable Speed Drives industry.
The first sales role lead to others in similar and related fields and also included one opportunity with a predominantly Mechanical Engineering Company that also supplied integrated Electro-Mechanical drive packages. Thus I obtained very good exposure to Mechanical Engineering as well as the opportunity to combine the concepts of both Electrical & Mechanical Engineering on the same project. Positions I have held include Key Account Manager, Applications and Sales Engineer, Sales Engineer, Sales
Manager, State Manager, Business Development Manager, & Technical Sales Engineer, & Regional Sales Manager.
I am proud of my achievements and am comfortable with my ability to handle any situation. The guiding factor is “back to basics analysis” as part of my “learn to do it right lesson”.
Team work is important and I avidly support the “Team Concept”. In team situations there is sometimes no defined or nominated leader. In these situations my practice is to assume a guiding role to keep the work flow happening and on track. If however the situation dictates the necessity to function alone, then I am confident and comfortable with doing this.
The sharing of ideas and information through open communication, issuing instructions or procedure changes where warranted, and reporting both up and down the line are part of my everyday life. I empathically listen to others and seek to fully understand and appreciate their needs before seeking to have them understand mine. Thus the communication is meaningful and effective.
