Standing up for those left behind2
The economic strain of recent years has hit hardest at those with the least, people who live paycheck to paycheck, people who never have enough saved to meet emergencies. Many of them have turned to JFS Family Assistance programs for help, and we have been able to fill the gaps with food support, cash assistance and expert referral to other sources of support.
In short, we’ve stopped the bleeding. We are justifiably proud of this work, but our real charge is creating long-term solutions. In partnership with Combined Jewish Philanthropies, we’ve laid the groundwork to address the challenges of moving forward. How do we help families get back on track with their aspirations? What can we put in place to help strengthen and stabilize families and increase employability?
At the same time, how do we enhance services to a growing population of elders and continue to serve a diverse client base that includes low-income immigrant children and their families, adoptive families and young Jewish families?
And how will we measure effectiveness and success?
Throughout the year we have been working with Root Cause, a leader in the field of social innovation, to shape an integrated performance measurement system that will be implemented across program areas. It will enable us to increase the scale and scope of our impacts throughout Metrowest, improve lives and strengthen community.
For us, for our committed volunteers, staff and supporters and for the 4,000 people JFS serves each year, this is another step toward better serving Metrowest. We are JFS.
Marc Jacobs Lester Schindel Chief Executive Officer President

Patient Navigator is one of the innovative JFS programs that defines new responses to changing needs. As boomers age and require more support, JFS has trained volunteers to escort seniors to medical appointments, providing transportation, accurate transmission of information and respite for family members.
There’s no place like home—for growing old. Elder Services encompass homecare, case management, and wellness programs at senior housing facilities throughout Metrowest.
IT’S IN THE NUMBERS:
21 homecare workers spent 19,142 hours attending to the needs of 135 frail older adults.
53 Patient Navigator volunteers trained to assist, escort and listen.
171 seniors brought to 330 medical appointments.
A Patient Navigator helps me keep my
medical appointments. I am JFS.

Jewish Family Network, a partnership with the JCC of Greater Boston, forges Jewish connections for hundreds of young families through weekly playgroups, large monthly gatherings and more intimate “For Parents Only” events. Kesher 13 connects youngsters preparing for B’nai Mitzvah and their families with Jewish elders living in assisted living facilities throughout Metrowest to celebrate holidays and traditions, joining the generations. The JFS Kesher rabbi makes weekly visits to nursing home residents, bringing them the joy and warmth of Shabbat.
For over thirty years, Adoption Choices has been helping children find their forever families. With experience ranging from special needs to international adoption, the caring staff of Adoption Choices has been involved in the unification of 920+ families and provides important services to adoptive parents across Massachusetts.
IT’S IN THE NUMBERS:
250 new families welcomed by Jewish Family Network.
50 young parents and their children made new friends at weekly playtimes at the JFS Children’s Room.
47 B’nai Mitzvah age children and 125 elders in Metrowest nursing homes and assisted living facilities brought together through Kesher 13.
18 families and children brought together with the help of Adoption Choices.

Food insecurity threatens people living on the edge. Cuts in food stamps have brought more clients to our food pantry. Food staples at Lucy and Joe’s Food Pantry at JFS and Healthy Harvest distributions of fresh produce at the Wilson School have helped sustain hundreds of families this year.
We volunteer at Lucy and Joe’s Food Pantry. We are JFS.
Sustenance is one element of the Family Assistance Network, which begins by meeting immediate needs. Skilled case managers then provide referrals to long-term assistance. The goal is self-sufficiency. In partnership with Jewish Vocational Service, Ready for Success helps clients climb the first steps up the economic ladder by writing and focusing resumes, networking and applying for jobs.
‘‘ ’’
Family Assistance Network
IT’S IN THE NUMBERS:
300 families helped by the Family Assistance Network to meet basic needs and move forward.
400 visits to Lucy and Joe’s Food Pantry by families and elders for grocery staples and kosher foods.
1,430 bags of fresh produce for 80 families through Healthy Harvest.
20 men and women Ready for Success re-enter the job market supported by expert case management.

Reducing Achievement Gaps
Based at Framingham’s Wilson School, Reducing Achievement Gaps is a JFS-designed and run program focused on building success. It encompasses tutoring and mentoring for children with an emphasis on math and reading skills, and bilingual training for parents to enable them to encourage their childrens’ learning.
JFS developed Parent University in partnership with Mass Bay Community College to build parents’ capacity to support their children’s education while reaching their own goals.
Food insecurity is an issue for many Wilson families, and JFS supports two nutrition programs at the school. Healthy Harvest distributes fresh produce bi-weekly; Weekend Nutrition participants receive food staples to assure that children who get breakfast and lunch at school during the week do not go hungry on the weekend.
IT’S IN THE NUMBERS:
25 fourth graders tackled math problems and hands-on activities in Math Academy.
35 third graders were tutored and mentored in All Stars.
30 parents joined Parent University.
80 families added fresh fruits and vegetables to their tables through Healthy Harvest.
48 families turned to Weekend Nutrition for pantry staples such as rice, beans, peanut butter and cereal.

Special Friends Host Committee
Our 24th annual Seize the Dream celebration highlighted the work of extraordinary people whose efforts help so many to seize and realize their dreams. Community activists Leslie and Jonathan Gerber, child development specialist Ellie and CJP President Barry Shrage and retired Wilson School principal Robin Welch were honored at our 2014 gala.

We are volunteers. We are JFS.
Volunteers are vital to JFS’ success, whether filling backpacks with school supplies for Wilson students, distributing produce for Healthy Harvest, escorting seniors to medical appointments, or insuring the success of Seize the Dream. We are grateful for the many hours they commit to making these programs successful!

The JFS/Metrowest Endowment, begun last year with a magnificent gift from the Mary Hartson Whittaker Charitable Foundation, is key to our continued ability to innovate and respond to change. Endowments are built by direct gifts and by creating gift intentions large and small, each one demonstrating commitment and connection to JFS, to our Metrowest community and to those who will turn to us in the future for assistance and support.
We are enormously grateful to these generous men and women who have made legacy commitments to JFS.‘‘ ’’We give to strengthen the lives of others.
