REPASO - Stem-Changing Verbs

• Auxiliary, or helping verbs, are verbs that introduce an infinitive. They are also sometimes called modal verbs.

• Ir a – to be going to do something

• necesitar- to need

• tener que – to have to

• querer – to want

• poder- to be able, can

• acabar de – to just have done something

• When you use a helping verb, you must determine the subject of the sentence and add the appropriate reflexive pronoun to the end of the infinitive or before the conjugated verb. Use “acostarse”, “lavarse” & “levantarse”in the following examples:

Tener expressions from Capítulo 4(page 126)

• Tener ganas de descansar- to feel like resting.

• Tener prisa- to be in a hurry

• Tener sed- to be thirsty

• Tener hambre- to be hungry.

SENTIRSE• Me siento nos sentimos

• te sientes os sentís

• se siente se sienten

She feels happy. – Se siente contenta.

They feel sad. – Se sienten tristes.

We feel bored.- Nos sentimos aburridos.

Remember adjectives must agree with thenouns they modify!

¿Cómo te sientes hoy?

• The infinitive is SENTIRSE. Follow the pattern. Conjugate the verb according to the subject, place the appropriate reflexive pronoun BEFORE the conjugated verb.

• Ella ______________(sentirse) cansada. se siente

(remember sentirse is a boot verb)

• Regular verbs: Tú form take away the “s”

Reflexive commands follow the same rule for affirmative

commands however …¡ojo!

• For commands only!! Conjugate the verb to form a command then attach the pronoun to the end of the affirmative command and add an accent to the stressed syllable (3rd from the end)

• Levantarse (tú) (Get up!) televánta

Negative Commands

• Form negative commands by putting the verb in the “yo” form, drop o, opposite vowel, add “s”

Hablo hable No hables

Fumo fume No fumes

como coma No comas

duermo duerma No duermas

escribo escriba No escribas

Irregular Negative Commands

• Hacer No hagas tu tarea.

• Ir No vayas al colegio.

• poner No pongas la mesa.

• salir No salgas tarde a la fiesta.

• Ser No seas malo.

• tener No tengas miedo.

• Venir No vengas aquí.

Negative commands in the reflexive.

• Yo form / drop the “o”/ opposite vowel/ add “s” / put appropriate reflexive pronoun INFRONT of the conjugated verb.

• No te levantes. Don’t get up

• No te maquilles. Don’t put on make up.

• No te estires. Don’t stretch.

• No te enojes. Don’t get angry.
