Hero Wars A tag focused game for KS1 and KS2

Equipment:

ü Cones/markersü Bibs/bandsü Beanbags(coloured)/tennisballs

Setup: Splityourclassinto4equalteams(canbe6ifyouhavemorechildren)andputthemintocolouredbibs.Eachteamshouldhavenomorethansixorsevenplayers.Telleachteamwhichsuperherotheyarerepresenting:- Red=Spiderman- Blue=Superman/Superwoman- Yellow=Wolverine- Green=IncredibleHulkFeelfreetochangeanyoftheabovesuperheroestoyourownasthesearejustanexample.Eachteamnominatesa‘captain’forthefirstround(changecaptainforeachsubsequentround).Makethecaptainstandoutbygivingthemanarmbandtowearorallowthemtotucktheirbibintotheirshorts.ThebasicKS1versionofthisgameisplayedwithinanarearoughly15x15yards(giveortake)soissuitableforasmallindoorhallwithtwoteamssatofforyoucansetupparallelpitchesoutside.Useconestomarkoutthepitchand2cornerzonesoppositeeachother(Thesearethecaptainscorners).Everyplayer,includingthecaptainsaregivenabeanbag.Eachroundofherowarsisroughly2-3minuteslong.

How to play: Theaimofthegameissimple.Capturealloftheoppositeteamsplayersbeforethetimerunsouttowin.Alternatively,havethefewestplayerscapturedwhenthetimelimitdoesrunout.Whenthewhistlesounds,theoutfieldplayersmusttrytocaptureoppositeteammembersbyslidingtheirbeanbagalongthegroundtostrikethemontheirfoot.Ifaplayeriscaptured,theymustpickuptheirbeanbag,placeitontheirheadandstandwiththeirfeetatshoulderwidthapart.Playersareencouragedtouseawarenesstododgeandavoidbeingcaptured.The role of the CAPTAIN: Thekeytosuccessisthecaptain.Theybeginthegameintheirsafezone(corner)andheretheycan’tbecaptured.However,thecaptainistheONLYPLAYERthatisabletoFREEtheircapturedteammates.Theydothisbyleavingtheirsafezoneandslidingtheirbeanbagthroughtheircapturedteammateslegsandgatheringitontheotherside.Theyarethenpermitted

tore-entertheirsafezoneatanytime.Thisisariskandrewardstrategy.Ifthecaptainisabletokeeptheirteammatesfreethentheyarelikelytowinthegame.However,ifthecaptainthemselvesarecapturedoutsideoftheirsafezone,thenthegameendsimmediatelyandtheopposingteamwin.PlayHerowarsasaminiroundrobinandalloweachteamtoplayagainsteachother,ensuringyouswapthecaptaineveryround.Progressions:

Ø Usetennis/softballsinsteadofbeanbagswhenoutside.Muststilluseanunderarmrollingaction.

Ø Playthesamegameusingfootballs.Childrendribbleaballaroundand‘pass’againsteachother’slegs.

Ø Playusinghockeysticks.Dribbleaballaroundandpassagainstfeet/legs.

Ø Ifyouhaveanyextraplayersusethemasa‘TheJoker’–everyround,thejokerisreleasedfor30secondsandisallowedtocaptureanybodytheywant.FurtherProgression…Ifcapturedbythejokeryousitdownandareoutofthegameforthatround.

Ultimate Hero Wars

OncethechildrenarefamiliarwithHeroWarsandanyprogressionsthatyouhavedecidedtoadd,theyarereadyforUltimateHeroWars.ThisisbestplayedinKS2andonlyafterthechildrenhavealreadybeenintroducedtobasicherowars,thusensuringtheyknowtherules.Thesetupisidenticalasbefore,witheachteamnominatingonecaptainandallhavingbeanbags/tennisballsetc.Thistimehowever,thegamebecomesa4-waymatchasopposedtoa2-waymatch.Ofcourse,theplayingareawillhavetobeincreasedtoaccommodatethis,butitresultsinanamazingspectacle!Seediagrambelowforanexamplepitchsetup!
