RAILEGELBVIEH/BALANCER
Production Sale
ThursdayMarch 14th, 2013
12:30 p.m. MST
Burlington Livestock ExchangeBurlington, Colorado
DMRS The Factor 297Z-- Lot 16
Welcome to our 2013 SaleWe would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to our annual production sale. Also, a special thanks to those of you who have purchased
bulls in the past and have confidence in our program. Most of the bulls again this year are Balancers. The Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) proclaims that crossbred females are 30% more
productive over their lifetimes. The advantages of crossbreeding effect cow efficiency, longevity, lifetime productive, weaning performance and yearling performance. Remember, Balancer is a trademark name that the Gelbvieh breed has given to the Gelbvieh-Angus cross in which both parents are registered in their respective breed associations. If one parent wasn’t registered, the offspring could not have a meaningful set of EPDs and other valuable information.
The American Gelbvieh Association as of January 2013 released a new set of EPDs that will share a common base with Simmental and Red Angus. The Board of Directors passed this measure to help simplify bull selection for commercial producers. If the EPDs seem a little different this year this is why. We have inserted a page in the catalog called New Generation AGA EPDs. It explains more on these new EPDs and gives the averages for purebreds and Balancers along with the percentile breakdowns.
In order to keep improving and stacking the genetics in our favor we try to use herdsires that are balanced in their traits for calving ease, growth, milk and the carcass traits. The three Angus sires that we use to produce the F1 cross: Lee’s Outline 7047 with his great disposition, easy fleshing ability and Milk EPD; and Hopps Look At Me who gives his offspring that great look with a long wide hip and bone substance to go along with his excellent growth EPDs and Eagle Pass Total 0007 ET who excels in growth, milk and disposition. The Balancer herdsires that we use on our Balancer females are: U409 (a Net Worth son whose offspring consistently come home in the fall having the heaviest weaning weights as a sire group), Mr Premium 9152WET(GAR US Premium Beef) to add growth and carcass traits,TAU Mr Manitoba 13X(a Grid Topper 43T son) with lots of rib and muscle and last but certainly not least is our sire for heifers TAU Mr In Focus 18W(Mytty In Focus) who has really done his job well.
This year in addition to the bulls we will offer 6 open Balancer Registered heifers for sale. It’s an exciting time in the cattle business despite the challenges we had this past summer with the drought. The prices have remained very good and
experts tell us that it should hold for some time. The nation’s cowherd is still shrinking and when cow numbers do start increasing and more heifers are retained for breeding, slaughter numbers will drop even further and prices will increase even more.
We weaned off earlier this past summer due to the drought and placed all the calves in a local feedlot for the first 30 days due to the fact that we had no feed laid in yet. They were pretty much on a maintenance ration until they were brought home. The bulls did exceptionally well after they were home as you can see by their WPDA and some of their gains since weaning.
There are bulls in this sale that offer calving ease as well as performance. We look forward to seeing you on sale day to evaluate this year’s set of bulls. The sale this year is again in Burlington, Colorado, a full service community along I-70 that has most major motel chains. This year’s sale will be broadcast on the internet with DV Auction so if you can’t make the sale you can do it online. Videos of each lot will be up
before the sale.Or if you are interested in a bull, let us know and we can help you with the purchase or put you in touch with someone that will help bid on the bull
for you. Please do not hesitate to call or stop by if you have questions on any of the offerings.Sincerely, The Railes
There will be a $50/bull discount for taking them home sale day.
Please join us for a complimentary lunch on sale day.

New Generation AGA EPDs
The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.
Gelbvieh and Balancer® Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus
Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.
Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology
For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal more unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.
Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDsThe true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA
enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.
Growth Traits are More ReliableThe new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight
(YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.
Carcass Traits are StandardizedIn recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass
traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-to-finish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable.
For questions or more information contact the AGA at 303-465-2333 or visit www.gelbvieh.org.

(Use IGENITY logo on this page) The IGENITY Profile IGENITY® provides the beef industry with the most comprehensive genetic profile of multiple traits of economic importance. The insights gained from an IGENITY profile help producers make more confident selection, management and marketing decisions. The IGENITY profile includes multiple-marker analyses for traits such as: Tenderness, Marbling, Quality Grade, Yield Grade, Fat Thickness, Ribeye Area, Average Daily Gain, Heifer Pregnancy Rate, Stayability, Calving Ease and Docility. IGENITY Profile traits reported: Raile Gelbvieh is providing IGENITY scores for several of the traits. The remaining trait scores are available upon request for your consideration. Please contact us or our IGENITY Representative Rick Pfortmiller (785) 230-9507 and we will be happy to share those with you. Profile Score Advantages To assist cattle producers in understanding the value of DNA technology, IGENITY has developed a scoring system for each trait using a scale of 1 to 10. Higher values are not necessarily better — they simply indicate that the animal has the potential for more of that trait. The following descriptions and table (Table 1) are useful in describing each trait and reflect the relative difference expected in animals compared to contemporaries with an IGENITY profile score of 1. Average Daily Gain: The IGENITY profile results for Average Daily Gain identifies an animal’s genetic potential for rate of gain. Animals which score a 10 would have the potential to gain .81 pounds more per day than animals that score a 1. Tenderness: The analysis in the IGENITY profile for tenderness represents an animal’s genetic potential for tenderness as measured by Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF), with 10 being the most tender and 1 being the least tender. Lower shear force means more tender beef. In a group of animals with a score from IGENITY of 10 for tenderness, 2.3 pounds less shear force is required than an animal with a score from IGENITY of 1. Marbling Score: Higher scores from IGENITY for marbling equal greater genetic potential for marbling. In a group of animals with a score from IGENITY of 10 for marbling, the average marbling score can be expected to be 161 points greater than animals with a score of 1. The USDA beef grading system for marbling uses a 100 to 999 point scale. Marbling points reflect how much intramuscular fat is present in each carcass, and thus the potential to grade USDA Choice. Fat Thickness: Lower IGENITY profile scores indicate less external fat, while higher scores reflect more external fat with a difference of .37 inches between a group of animals that scored a 1 versus a group of animals that scored a 10. Ribeye Area: Higher scores from the IGENITY profile reflect larger ribeye areas and lower scores reflect smaller ribeye areas. In a group of animals with a score from IGENITY of 10 for ribeye area, the average ribeye is expected to be 2.56 square inches larger than in a group of animals with a score of 1. Percent Choice (Quality Grade) Higher scores from IGENITY for quality grade equal greater genetic potential to grade choice or higher. In a group of animals that possess a score from IGENITY of 10 for quality grade, it is likely that 64.4%or more should grade USDA Choice or higher. Table 1. IGENITY RESULTS KEY

HHybrids. It started with single-cross corn; it has dominated broiler and swine production, the state conservation depart-ment releases hybrid game fish, and now the car companies are promoting hybrids. All for the same reason; there are advan-tages to hybrids.
The movement to hybrid seedstock in beef production is in its infancy and increased usage in commercial beef production is inevitable. Why…because hybrids simplify many of the challenges a commercial beef producer faces and increase profitability. Hybrids also stabilize breed composition; in turn that provides more, not less, consistency in a calf crop. I remember sitting in Beef Production class and a number of Animal Breeding classes while the professor diagramed crossbreeding systems for beef production. I caught myself wondering how anyone could sleep though such a stimulating lecture. It’s all about heterosis, breed complementarity, maternal heterosis and potentially utilizing terminal breeds, what could be better? I’ve since figured out it was all about maximizing complexity, ignoring simplicity and real-world application…the smartest students may have been the ones napping. Let’s take a look at a basic two-breed rotation. The textbook model assumes that you’ll have bulls of each breed and separate your cows into two breeding groups based on their sire breed. In big herds, where it is feasible, it requires extra labor to sort cows and calves, making sure you don’t split a pair, and it doesn’t fit with improved management practices like rotational grazing. The three-breed textbook model, to take full advantage of maternal heterosis, is just one step more complicated.
The Crossbreeding Reality The reality approach in most herds is to buy a bull of one breed use him two years and then replace him with one from the second breed. This is especially true
in small, single herd sire cowherds, but for simplicity even many big herds rotate breeds every other year. Keeping replacement females every cycle in this system means the resulting calf crop has a variety of percentages, from 50% and up, of the sire breed used in that cycle. How does that provide consistency? The temptation might be to consider straight breeding commercial cows. But the merits of crossbreeding are too great for a commercial cattleman to ignore. Crossbreeding provides heterosis in many traits but in particular the traits that are the most difficult to apply selection pressure for improvement. Cow longevity, lifetime productivity and calf survivability, are examples where heterosis can give a 25 percent or higher advantage.
The heterosis advantages in growth and milk are smaller, and in carcass traits we see little hybrid vigor. In these traits breed complementarity, combining breeds with offsetting strengths and weaknesses comes to play.
The Balancer® Advantage As a commercial producer, if I had straight-bred or high-percentage British cattle, I’d use Gelbvieh bulls until I had
some Gelbvieh influence in a majority of my cowherd. At that point, I’d switch to Balancers® to stabilize the level of Gelbvieh and British in my herd at a desirable level. Under this scenario, the skeptics argue that somehow the parent breeds will genetically segregate in the offspring, yielding more variability, but this just isn’t the case. Consistency in the calf crop comes from the progeny being very similar in breed composition. The data from the Gelbvieh Alliance and Meat Animal Research Center agree that combining continental and British influence at the right levels pay big dividends in feed efficiency and targeting a desirable, and profitable, level of Yield and Quality grades.
In the pasture, Gelbvieh influence in your cowherd that will provide great fertility, milk and growth, while keeping mature cow size in check. There is a reason commercial beef producers appreciate the advantages of Balancer bulls. They take the headaches out of crossbreeding, provide heterosis, and let producers focus on the windows of acceptability for feedlot performance and end product merit. Balancers are the easy shortcut to profitability.
Why Balancers®? Crossbreeding made easy.Wayne Vanderwert, Ph.D.

Good Bulls Don’t Cost...They PayBy Frank Padilla
COST CUTTING HAS become a survival tool for most cow-calf producers for many years. In current economic times, producers are looking hard to reduce input costs in any phase of their operations where they can. But when it comes to the bottom line, lower costs will get you only half of the equation. Herd sire selection is directly attributable to 80 percent of herd improvement. What you can afford to pay for a bull depends on more than finding one at the lowest price.
Let’s compare two Gelbvieh bulls, Bull A and Bull B. Each bull’s expected progeny differences (EPDs), plus the breed average for Gelbvieh sires are listed in table 1. If both bulls sire 40 calves (20 heifers and 20 bulls) from the same cow herd for four consecutive years, how much more can you afford to pay for a bull with better genetics?
GrowthGrowth trait EPDs are expressed in
pounds. If the steer and heifer calves are sold at weaning, what advantage does Bull A have over Bull B? Bull A has a weaning weight EPD of 50 pounds; Bull B, 30 pounds. Based on these EPDs, you can expect Bull A, on average, to sire calves that weigh 20 more pounds at weaning than Bull B when bred to the same cows.
If 15 percent of the 40 calves are kept for replacement females, 34 calves multiplied by the additional pounds sired by Bull A results in 680 pounds of additional weaning weight per year. If these pounds are valued at $150 per hundredweight (cwt), yearly gross sales from calves sired by Bull A amounts to an increase of $1,020 per year. That annual gross sales amount ($1,020) multiplied
over four years results in a $4,080 of increased gross sales from Bull A when compared to Bull B.
MaternalDaughters from Bull A should not
be overlooked when adding productivity and dollars. Bulls with superior maternal genetics sire daughters that have increased performance. Increased milk production and growth are passed on to daughters of superior genetic bulls.
One way to compare a sire’s ability to transmit milk and growth rate to his daughter is to calculate maternal weaning weight. The maternal weaning weight is expressed in pounds and is equal to the sire’s milk EPD plus one-half of his weaning weight EPD. Bull A’s maternal weaning weight would be one-half 50 plus 22 or 47 pounds (1/2 x 50WW + 22Milk = 47 pounds of maternal weaning weight). Bull B’s calculated maternal weaning weight would be one-half of 30 plus 12 or 27 pounds (1/2 x 30WW + 12 = 27 pounds of maternal weaning weight). Using this example, you can expect Bull A’s daughters, on average, to raise calves that are 20 pounds heavier at weaning than Bull B’s, assuming they are bred to the same bull.
If twenty-four females, 15 percent of the total calf crop each year, are retained out of Bull A and these cows stay in the herd six years, there will be an additional 2,880 pounds of weaned weight compared to Bull B’s daughters. If this weight is valued at $150 cwt, there will be extra gross sales of $4,320 for Bull A’s daughters’ lifetimes compared with that to that of Bull B’s. Take note that optimum selection for milk production needs to take place in
consideration of environmental differences and nutrition. Producers should analyze their requirements and make breeding decisions accordingly.
Easy math tells us that Bull A has returned $8,400 more over his lifetime used than Bull B. This example does not necessarily suggest that you pay an extra $8,400 for Bull A but it does help explain why a sire’s genetic potential is such an important factor when selecting bulls to purchase. Purchasing a bull is a long-term investment that has great influence on your herd’s productivity. Consider all the factors when you decide to purchase a bull. Remember as well that EPDs of different breeds cannot be compared without across breed adjustments being calculated.
Take the time and do the math. Good bulls don’t cost…. but rather they pay you back big in the long run.
