Clearer future plans and
evolution of the technology
Private mobile radio systems are designed specifically to address the needs of professionals in need of fast communications and the ability to communicate within a work group simultaneously, with mission
critical features
Communication requirements (I)
• Voice calls to drivers, stations, depots, control centres, public address to passengers
• Maintenance personnel• Security personnel• Integration with other agencies
in mission critical operations (police, fire brigades, etc…)
Voice&
Security
Critical
Data
• Management of alarms and events
• Monitoring and diagnosis functions
• Location applications• Circulation number assignment• Emergency messages
TETRA has emerged by itself as the most used radio standard for metro systems. Hundred of
references worldwide.
Communication requirements (II)
VitalData
• Railway signaling applications (safety and protection systems):
Communication of protection systems: On-board wayside
Communication Interlockings Control Centre ATS
Communication between interlockingsTETRA is a suitable
alternative to support the
wireless data requirements
demanded by the signaling
applications (as ETCS, CBTC or
others).
Non-vital data
• Video applications: Video surveillance of cars from
the driver and the control center Images of the station in the
driving desk when approaching.
Multimedia entertainment for passengers
• Remote maintenance (file downloading in depots, etc…)
Communication requirements (III)
Fixed cameras in stations, tunnels,
etc..

TETRA Added value for railways
Comparing with other technologies, like commercial WiFi or GSM-R, TETRA has an excellent and better performance in aspects as: Reliability
Proven technology. Very robust and resilient air interface
Best immunity against interferences
Standard layers for Quality of Service (QoS)
Availability
Ready for redundant design no single point of failure
Maintainability
Network Management System with continuous monitoring
Licensed Frequency bands (UHF)

Communication Based signalling scenarios
ETCS Signaling solution: General overview
Allows for continuous control of train movements
Reduction in wayside equipment: In-cab signaling eliminates wayside equipment such as signals and track circuits between stations (decreasing maintenance costs).
Moving blocks: it will result in more efficient traffic (shorter headways), adaptability and improved safety.

TETRA data solution for railway signalling
VITAL DATA
Railway signalling systems (ETCS, CBTC, PTC…): Train-to-ground communication Communication Interlockings ATS Control
Center Communication between interlockings
Environment description- Signalling systems needed to guarantee safety for passengers and freight (ETCS,
CBTC, PTC)- Long distances and complicated areas. This leads to look for solutions based on
communications- Terminals “only data”- Low traffic density (few trains per hour) / TETRA narrow band data rate is enough
for the data requirements- Railways normative is generally required
ETCS over TETRA: Kazakhstan railways
First ever TETRA network to support a rail signaling solution based on the European
Traffic Control System (ETCS)
Kazakhstan railway
• Uzen-Bolashak line (Turkmenistan border): 130 Km and 8 stations. Beginning of a long railway line linking Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan.
• Zhetygen-Khorgos line (China border): 300 Km. Establishes a new route between China and Europe.
