I don't remember who sent me this PDF of an Owner's Manual, so cannot give credit to him. I have made some notes in this manual, all are in a yellow box like this one.

I do not remember who sent me this, so can't give credit. My notes are in yellow boxes inside on some pages, but may not be displayable in Google Chrome.

I suggest you do not use this diagram, but use the ones from BMW that are on my website, http://bmwmotorcycletech.infoThe BMW diagram, poor, originally in this booklet (someone added this colored one) is at page 84. My website has FAR better diagrams

Sticky Note
BMW has used, depending on year and model, both orange and red for the oil pressure lamp. BMW also moved the oil lamp to the second from the top, instead of second from bottom

Sticky Note
BMW has had several types of switch gear, and in the early years of transitioning to the /6 series, any of THREE types could be installed, so yours may vary, and in the USA you may not have the 3 position switch in the left sketch at all.

BMW's advice here for position 1 of the damper is OK, but if you have the steering adjusted properly, which is a bit tighter than BMW advises later herein, you should use position 0, and 1 and 2 for very loose and rocky-pebbly roads or roads with distinct rain grooves.

The clamshell models like this bike have the Enrichener (choke) lever on it. HORIZONTAL is OFF.

Sticky Note
DO NOT overtighten the 10 mm pan bolts.

Sticky Note
Oil filter design has changed somewhat, and if you have an optional oil cooler, is very different indeed. Consult my website:http://bmwmotorcycletech.info

DO NOT overtighten the plug in illustration 21

re: Figure 27: Fork should NOT QUITE want to fall to left or right, and not quite if slightly nudged.

Sticky Note
Wheel bearing service is tricky on these models, so see my website:http://bmwmotorcycletech.info.The wheel hubs MUST BE HEATED for servicing of the bearings.

Sticky Note
Get appropriate taper tip for the grease gun you own by visiting an autoparts store, or, a store that sells/services chainsaws.
snowbum
Sticky Note
clutch lever has a nylon bushing, and it must be replaced if lever moves UP and DOWN considerably. OTHERWISE the cable can be CUT by the SLOT.

Sticky Note
NEVER lift spark plug caps off a running engine. Use SHORTING adapters. BMW is wrong here.ALSO, I recommend that the idle rpm speed after full warmup be 900 to 1025 rpm for best carburetor operation and best oiling of the timing chain and sprockets.
snowbum
Sticky Note
Information on synchronizing carburetors is on my website, and it is available there in two types, one for shorting the spark plugs method and the other is for vacuum gauge method. Use a higher rpm than BMW says, perhaps 900-1025 rpm for idle AFTER FULL WARMUP, which means AFTER A 10 MILE MINIMUM RIDE.
snowbum
Sticky Note
NEVER, EVER, lift the spark plug caps while engine is running. To shut off one cylinder, do NOT lift the cap, but use shorting adaptors!!!
snowbum
Sticky Note
Never, EVER, lift the spark plug caps. Use shorting adaptors!! Adjust for equal SOUND, shorting first one, then the other.
snowbum
Sticky Note
NEVER, EVER use grease on the spark plug threads. If you wish, use a commercial antiseize paste, sparingly, and reduce torque 1/4th to 1/3. NEVER EVER re-gap a spark plug after it has been run even once..the metal can break, damaging the engine.
snowbum
Sticky Note
The F timing is much more important than the S, so set the timing for the F dot, after you adjust the points gap.3000+ rpm.
snowbum
Sticky Note
Rear wheel can be more easily removed if you remove front wheel, strap crossover to center stand securely, and let the front end fully down to the tarmac
snowbum
Sticky Note
problems with starting are often closed-up points or tightened valve clearances.
snowbum
Sticky Note
do not use these low tire pressures with modern tires. I suggest F33 to 36; R37-42
