• After making his first pair of shoes at age nine, for his sisters to wear at their confirmation, young X, a famous Italian shoe designer, decided that he had found his calling. His scientific and creative approach to shoes spawned many innovations such as the wedge heel and cage heel, the latter being his most famous invention. The X strips find permanent place in International Museum of Cartoon Art, USA. In 1969, Pran sketched X for the Hindi magazine Lotpot, which made him famous.

• The Beating Retreat ceremony officially denotes the end of Republic Day festivities. It is conducted on the evening of 29 January, the third day after the Republic Day. It is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military, the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. It starts with the National Salute, which is followed by the playing of the Indian National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana. The ceremony starts by the massed bands of the three services marching in unison, playing popular marching tunes like Colonel Bogey March, Sons of the Brave and Qadam Qadam Badaye Ja.
• But a regular feature of this pageant is the last tune played before the Retreat, when the National Flag is lowered. It is the famous Christian Hymn X written by Henry Francis Lyte set to music by W. M. Monk and one of Mahatma Gandhi's personal favorite hymns. When X was born it was foretold that he would die young. To prevent his death, his mother Thetis took X to the River Styx, which was supposed to offer powers of invulnerability, and dipped his body into the water. X grew up to be a man of war who survived many great battles.
