For students

Here are some ideas of different ways to publish your work, starting from the simplest to the more complex and time consuming (but fun)!

Publishing PaperChoose from the selection ofpublishing paper to hand writeyour final copy.

Create your own publishing paper with writing lines, bordersand spaces for student created graphics or fancy headings.Print out WordArt headings or graphics and glue in spaces.

Publish in KidspirationClick the Publish button and finish publishing your story in Word.

KidPixInsert a photo or draw a picture that has something to do with your story.

Choose a suitable font and type your story.

Use the paint can to fill in the background.

KidPix is an old favourite for publishing and there are many ways to present stories using the tools available. Use the Paint can for backgrounds, use the background button to set a background picture. Insert Photos or the child can draw a picture.

Mimio OR IWB publish

Publish your story using IWBsoftware.Use the coloured pen options and graphics to illustrate it.

Students love using the Interactive Whiteboard. If it is not being used let a student publish their work on it using the pens to write their story.

Make a comicTake some photos and insert into Comic Life.

Type your story into the speech bubbles.

Create Pictures in Paint or KidPix. Save them as jpegs in Paintand Export them in KidPix as jpegs.

Be creative when adding your photos to your slideshow. Some of your photos could be displayed over the whole slide with the text on top. Use maps to set the scene.

MovieMakerVideo a story that you have created with toys and the movie set.

Import into MovieMaker.

Add a voice-over retelling the story.

Windows only: Put all the photos you want to use into a folder and then make a Movie recording your voice and adding music.

Journal StoryImport photos, resize so they fill the page.

Type your story in textbox chunks and place on the page.

Be creative when adding your photos to your page. Use the Washout feature to fade the photos or Recolour in Word 2007. Fill the whole page with photos, it could be one photo covering the whole page and then 3 small photos layered on top. Or spread three to a page. Type/Paste your text into textboxes over the photos.

PodcastRecord your voice telling the story.

Add some music.

Save it as a Podcast.

Record yourself reading the story either into an iPod or use the Microphone on the computer. Record in GarageBand (Mac) or Audacity(Win). Add music, jingles and stingers, send as a Podcast to iTunes.Download onto an iPod or listen to iTunes on the computer.

Class Writing BlogAdd an entry to our class blog by

publishing your Story. Add photos

or graphics to illustrate it.

Students can type/paste their story directly into a blog page.If inserting photos, make sure they are named with a unique name before uploading (particularly when uploading to wiki pages).

Create an account if you want to save these stories or just click on the ‘Give it a try’ if you are going to take a screen capture.

Cartoonised PhotosInsert photos into befunky.com and cartoonise them. Add them to PowerPoint.

Cartoonise your photos in Befunky http://www.befunky.com/index.php Or Fotoflexerhttp://fotoflexer.com/ Insert them into shapes and make a Cartoon slideshow (see slide 14).

Publish Online in Zoho or Google DocsType your story into Googleor Zoho. Illustrate it and sharewith others.

Zoho and Google Docs can be accessed online so students can work on the publishing at home. Also they can be shared with others which allows for peer review. (Terms of Service advise that there is a R13 rating for creating accounts).

Mac users resave your ‘Keynote’ as a ‘PowerPoint’ or as a PDF and then upload to Slideboom.

Kerpoof story

Publish your story in kerpoof.com and use the cartoon graphics and print out your story.

Kerpoof is a wonderful cartoon site, select Make a Story, choose a background and then drag graphics onto background. Add text to speech bubbles coming of characters and add text boxes for the narrative text. Print out in colour or as a colouring page. Screen capture to add to blogs and wikis.

Wordle

Wordle your story. See if otherstudents can work out what

you were talking about.

Wordle has many uses, great for proof reading, see how many times you have overused a word, but it is also great for publishing students work.

Animoto slideshow

Save your PowerPoint slides as jpegs and put them into animoto.com

As this slideshow moves quickly words should be simple, high impact less than six words to a page.Great way to publish a commercial, slogan or an advertisement.

Import your photos, add text captions with music.

Voicethread

Publish your story in voicethread.com and invite people to comment on it.

Import photos, Word or PowerPoint documents into Voicethread. Record your voice or type in a text message. Others can comment by voice or text.

Sketchcast

Retell your story in sketchcast.com, drawing the pictures and record your voice telling the story.

Record your voice telling the story and at the same time draw the pictures. Press Stop when you want to take a break and then start recording again. This show can then be embedded into wikis or blogs.

Webcam publishing

Read your story out aloud recording it on the webcam, show any pictures you may have drawn.

Use the webcam on your computer or laptop, or an external webcam.Students can record themselves reading their stories and showing the pictures.

Mixbook publish

Publish your story on mixbook.comInsert photos to illustrate your text.

Import photos or jpegs to mixbook, choose from the huge selection of templates, drag the photos in, type in the text boxes. When finished it will present as a book with pages that turn. Embed into wikis and blogs.

Publish in Issuu

Publish your story in Word or PowerPoint. Upload to issuu.com

Once you have uploaded your Word or PowerPoint, it will present as a book. Zoom in and out to see pictures more clearly. View in full screen. Embed into wikis or blogs.

UDL BookbuilderPublish your story with your own photos or graphics in bookbuilder.cast.org

Teachers, publish your younger student’s stories in Bookbuilder. Click on Create and Edit books. Add photos and text. Save the Books and then print out. Not able to be embedded into wikis and blogs. But can be viewed on the website and text can be read back to student.

This application is useful for drafting stories but makes a nicepresentation tool when printed out.
