A Recent Graduate

What Do Graduate Say?

"The PIWP program strategically planned my courses with the best Labor and Employment classes at the University of Minnesota, and after I graduated it has been an excellent supplement to my Master of Public Policy that I have used effectively in job interviews" –Simon Jonathan Mudge (HRIR Graduate), Legislative Council Service, New Mexico State Legislature.

Terry Risbey ,Minnesota Legislative Auditor’s Office

The Certificate gave me a background in the issues facing both employers and employees as I worked on these issues and helped provide a broader understanding of the issues of the various stakeholders, including governments (in their normal role and as employers), employee representatives, and retirees.  I have needed to understand the legal and economic context of employee benefits as a part of employee compensation and had to read relevant statutes and collective agreements.

The Work and Pay Certificate gives me an extra credential to show to potential employers and demonstrate that I made an extra effort in my education.  It also adds demonstrates a higher level of expertise in my chosen field.  I don't know if the Certificate was a factor in my getting my current job but I imagine it helped given the labor-related projects that the office was working on.

James Malley

While only 8 months into my rotational program at Raytheon, I'd say the bestthing the certificate has done for me is get me my next rotation in Labor.  We have a large union contract coming up in Largo, FL, and several people tried to get on the project, but with my certificate, it let upper management know I was an expert.

Sue Schultz

Completing courses for the Graduate Certificate on Policy Issues on Work and Pay allowed me to keep my knowledge and skills up-to-date, while I enhanced my marketability in the job market.  Upon completion of the Certificate on Policy Issues on Work and Pay, I was able to move from a clerical position to a director position, with a substantial increase in responsibilities and compensation.  Additionally, the certificate courseswere accepted as the electives for my Master’s of Education degree, which I am currently completing.
