Projecttitle/Jobpositiontitle:PhDFellowshipinEstimationofDistributionAlgorithmsforCombinatorialOptimizationProblemswithConstraints ResearchProject/ResearchGroupDescription.Combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) are optimization problemscharacterizedforhavingafinitesearchspace.Classicalexamplesarethetravellingsalesmanproblem,thequadraticassignmentproblemortheknapsackproblem.Allthese problems have in common that they are NP-hard: there is no knownpolynomial algorithm able to solve all the instances. Therefore the scientificcommunity has developed algorithms able to find good solutions in boundedcomputationaltime,theyarecalledmetaheuristicsalgorithms.EstimationofDistributionAlgorithms(EDAs)areasetofmetaheuristicsalgorithmsthatbelongto theEvolutionaryComputation field.ContrarytoGeneticAlgorithmsthat use genetic operators such as crossover and mutation to generate newindividuals, in EDAs a probability distribution is learnt from the selectedindividuals, which is later sampled to generate new promising individuals. EDAshave been successfully used in the solution of different real problems such asprotein folding, flowshop scheduling problem, etc. In spite of that, there are stilloptimizationproblemswhereEDAshavenotfoundoutstandingresults,oneoftheseareasareCOPswithconstraints.Thisisduetotheuseofinappropriateprobabilitymodels.AlmostofapplicationofEDAs toCOPswithconstraints learntprobabilitydistributioninunboundedspacesandthenmodifytheindividualsatsamplingtime.In this way the learnt distribution does not account for the information in theselected individuals. In this PhD project we pursue the use of probabilitydistributionsforconstraintspacesintheareaofEDAs.Particularlyweplantouseexponentialdistributionsbasedondistancesthatcanconsiderboundedspaces.Theobtainedalgorithmswill be applied in the solutionof academicproblems suchasgraph partitioning or number partitioning and finally to a real problem from acompany.Theprojectwillbeco-supervisedwitha researcherof theUniversityoftheBasqueCountryUPV/EHU.

ResearchGroup:MachineLearningThemachine learninggroupatBCAM is composedby3PhDstudents, 4Post-docresearchersandoneresearchlineleader.Theresearchershavealongstoryintheare of machine learning where they have published more than 100 journal ISIpapers in thebest journals in the field suchas:MachineLearning, IEEETrans.onPattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, Pattern Recognition, IEEE Trans. onNueral Networks and Learning Systems, etc. They have also carried out manyresearch works in collaboration with companies in the application of machinelearningmethodstoproblemsinmedicine,weather,energy,bioinformatics,etc.

JobPositiondescription.ThePhDstudentwithmeetregularly(everyweek)withthePhDsupervisors.Theworktobedevelopedimplies,reading,designingnewalgorithm,programmingthealgorithmsandevaluatingtheminnewproblems.Inadditiontothat,itisexpectedshe/hetowritescientificpapersaswellastoparticipateinconferencesandworkshopsofthearea.Finally,inordertocomplementher/hisdevelopmentastayinaninternationalprestigiousresearchcenterwillbecarriedoutforaperiodofatleastthreemonths.

o 10.692 euros (3.564 euros per year) for research costs such asconferencesandworkshopsattendance,short-stays,consumablesandintellectualpropertycosts,amongothers.

- PhDAwardof7.500euroswillbegrantedtoresearchersthatsubmittheirthesiswithin6monthsaftertheendofthefellowship.

Eligibilityrequirements

- Atthepublicationdateofthefinallistofselectedcandidates(29may2018),candidates must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent researchexperience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded adoctoraldegree.

- Atthetimeofrecruitment,candidatesmustcomplywithoneofthefollowingoptions:

o TohavecompletedthestudiesthatleadtoanofficialSpanish(orfromanother country of the European Higher Education Area) universitydegreeawarding300ECTScredits, ofwhichat least60ECTScreditsmustcorrespondtomasterlevel.

o Tohavecompletedadegreeinanon-Spanishuniversitynotadaptedtothe European Higher Education Area that gives access to doctoralstudies. The verification of an equivalent level of studies to the onesmentionedabovewillbemadebytheuniversitywhentheadmissionprocedurestarts.

- Mobility Rule: Candidatesmustnothave residedor carriedout theirmainactivity(work,studies,etc.)inSpainformorethan12monthsinthe3yearsimmediately prior to the publication date of the final list of selectedcandidates(29may2018).Shortstayssuchasholidayswillnotbetakenintoaccountwhencalculatingthemobilityrequirement.

PHASE2-FACE-TO-FACESELECTION:

- Candidate’spotential(weight40%): inordertohaveageneralperceptionofthecandidate’spotential,expertswillpayattentionto“soft”skills,abilitytopresent easily a complex reasoning, teamworking; and capabilities such as

- Motivation and statement of purpose (weight 30%): expertswill assesstheimpactoftheprojectforthecandidateandthesociety;projectinnovation,originality and feasibility; and candidate’s capabilities with regard to thescopeoftheproject.Academicbackgroundandtheoreticalfundamentals(weight 30%): experts will assess the consistency of the candidate’sacademicbackgroundandCVintheareachosentocarryoutthePhD.
