• Age: How old are the target audience? E.g. cartoon may attract more children. Then, you use bright happy color like red, yellow, green. Those primary colors, not so complicated.
• Gender: Female or male? E.g. romantic movie may attract more female audience. Then, you need to use feminine colors like pink…
Different colors on different audience
• e.g. the topic is related to politics or world affairs. The target audience is adult and the content should be serious.
• The design should be graphically low key and informational
Different colors on different audience• The Goal: Encourage children to eat more healthy food• The target audience is
children• The design should be
playful, colorful, childlike and fun
Movie theme1. What kind of movie is it?e.g. tragedy, romance, food documentary Or mystery
Cos different movie has different color approach and typeface
2. What’s the story about? What’s the content?
You know the story. Then, you’ll put the related elements and arrange the layout
Movie Theme
Movie elements
If you cannot think of any element, you can use mind map and brainstorm idea.
Movie ThemeThe theme (message) of MovieEach design must have a message. What do you want to tell the audience? Cos design is a graphic communication and medium to talk to people.
e.g. Life is dangerous in cityFriendship bonds us togetherWe should honor the soldiers.Nuclear war is destructive.
Sometimes, you add your voice, opinion or point of view through your artwork.
Design, Color scheme & Typeface• What’s the target audience?• What kind of movie? What’s
the story about? What’s the elements of this topic?
• What kind of mood that I want to give to the poster?
• What message that I want to send through the poster?
After asking those questions, you can start your design. You can choose the color scheme and typeface base on these questions.
Design, Color scheme & TypefaceMake sure the typeface match the movie theme and it is readable.
Design, Color scheme & TypefaceDoes this typeface match the theme?
We don’t need to see the content. From the typeface, we have already known that this is horror movie. So, typeface is very important.
Design, Color scheme & TypefaceDoes this typeface represent the ancient time?
Steps 1. Fill in the handout and design 2 thumbnails (roughs) It’s due on November 14th. This Thursday
2. Then, I’ll go through the roughs with you and pick one to do on computer
3. Then, base on the design, you’ll work more on photoshop or illustrator more. If you do the final compositing on Photoshop, import illustrator files into Photoshop. If you do the final compositing on Illustrator, import the Photoshop files into Illustrator
4. After we finish the poster on computer, we’ll critique on November 21st, Thursday.
For example• Let’s say the type effect is
done in Illustrator and the rest is done in Photoshop.
• The final compositing is in Photoshop.
• Then, we do the type effect on Illustrator first and import to Photoshop
For example:Only the bottles of san francisco, Hawaii & New York are done in Photoshop. All the rest is done in Illustrator.
Then, do the bottle first in Photoshop. Then, Import into Illustrator and finish the rest
So, base on the design, You need to decide which software for final compositing. Which software to do more.
