Adapting the Generic Product Development Process

• Generic (Market-Pull) Products(eg. sporting goods, furniture, tools)

• Technology Push Products(eg. gore-tex, tyvek envelopes)

• Platform Products(eg. consumer electronics, computers, printers

• Process-Intensive Products(eg. snack foods, cereals, chemicals, semiconductors)

• Customized Products(eg. motors, switches, batteries, containers)

• High-Risk Products(eg. pharmaceuticals, space systems)

• Quick-Build Products(eg. software, cellular phones)

• Complex Systems(eg. airplanes, jet engines, automobiles)

Example of Mission Statement

Identifying Customer Needs (Ch 4)

1. Gather raw data from customers(interviews, focus groups, observing product in use)

2. Interpret the raw data in terms of customer needs(see example on page 62)

3. Organize the needs into a hierarchy(primary, secondary, tertiary)

4. Establish relative importance of the needs(see example on page 66-67)

5. Reflect on the results and the process

Establishing Target Specifications (Ch 5)

1. Prepare the list of metrics(find out how the customer needs can be measured)

2. Collect competitive benchmarking information(get competitors specifications, ex page 80-81)

3. Set ideal and marginally acceptable target values(according to the competition, ex page 84)

4. Reflect on the results and the process(are the target realisitic? any missing?)

Conceptual Design Projects

Objectives:

• The main objective of this assignment is to apply theory on a small conceptual product design task.

• Further objectives are to practice product design in a small team and to practice the ability to communicate about product design both literally and orally.

Conceptual Design Projects

Team requirements:

• Creativity, hard work and imagination.• Coordination in the project groups.• Availability to find knowledge if lacked of skills.

...taking an ”idea” to ”concept selection”!

Conceptual Design Projects

Project instructions:

• Teams of 3-4 people on course website.• Basic mission statement for a design problem to start

from for each project group.• The advisor (Erik) will basically help you to start the

project and act as a discussion partner about the PD-theories during the project. The advisor will, however, not perform any design for you!

Conceptual Design Projects

Steps to follow (which probably needs iterations):

1. Problem identification and target specification.2. Concept generation.3. Concept selection.

…result in at least one promising conceptual design.

Conceptual Design Projects

Project examination:

1. Written technical report ~10 pages.2. Oral presentation by 2 people

- 15 minutes per project
