5.5 Functioning of the overspeed governor

Ë

Í
The overspeed governor is working according to the centrifugal
principle. Two centrifugal weights at rope sheave are held
in rest position by adjustable, pretensioned compression springs
 agaginst a stop.
When the tripping speed is reached these weights swing radially
to the outside, hook in to sliding brake and brake the rope
sheave.
The overspeed governor works in both senses of rotation. The
arrow that marks the down direction is loosely attached and shall
be fixed to the governor after the sense of direction is defined.
The overspeed governor is provided with electrical pre-tripping
that disconnects the safety circuit when 93% of the tripping
speed is reached.
The overspeed governor shall trip at 115 % - 125 % of the rated
speed. The tripping values are set in the factory and are secured
by a seal.
The monitoring switch (pre-tripping and tripping) shall be reset
manually after tripping to “ON” position.
The overspeed governor is equipped with a sliding brake .
When tripping speed is reached the rope sheave is braked by
the sliding brake and engages the safety gear. The rope sheave
remains rotating until standstill of the lift car. This way rope and
groove are handled with care especially if there are long braking
distances. The braking torque is set in the factory to 100 Nm.
The rope groove is a round groove with undercut.
16
PRODUCT INFORMATION
Overspeed governor GB260 Operating instruction
5.5.1 Electrical pre-tripping
The electrical pre-tripping causes the disconnection of the safety
circuit and engagement of the brake if the lift speed rises to about
93% of the tripping speed in up and down direction. Thus, in
down direction the lift is braked before the safety gear trips.
5.5.2 Sliding brake
The sliding brake of the overspeed governor provides the
engaging force to engage the safety gear. The rope running in the
rope groove has a special friction effect owing to the shape of the
groove. When the respective tripping speed is reached (in
advance resp. upon braking) this weights swing radially to the
outside and hook in into the sliding brake, thus braking the rope
sheave.
The initially high frictional force caused by the surface roughness
of new grooves and new ropes are decreasing in the course of
operating life and even will be reduced by friction-affecting
materials like grease, oil, dirt etc. and by the ordinary wear and
tear in the rope groove.
The loss of frictional force can be compensated only by
increasing the weight of the tensioning weight, which again will
increase the wear and tear.
5.5.3 Tensioning weight
The tensioning force applied by the tensioning weight is also
decisive for the achievable engaging force.
It should be rated so, that the friction resulting therefrom is higher
than the force that - owing to the set sliding torque of the brake -
is available in the groove. If braking is active the governor rope is
driving the rope sheave against the acting torque of the friction
brake and engages the safety gear.
17
PRODUCT INFORMATION
Overspeed governor GB260 Operating instruction
Check whether the selected tensioning weight with its known
tensioning force can produce a frictional force that complies with
the locally applicable rules. The tensioning weight is monitored
via a slack rope switch. If the governor rope breaks, the
tensioning weight swings down. Thus, the switch is forcibly
activated and the control circuit opens positively, so that the drive
brake is made active.
5.5.4 Governor ropes
Use only a flexible, stress-free and twist-free wire rope acc. to
DIN 3051 and DIN 2078. The rope diameter has to correspond
with the type plate data of the overspeed governor.
i
ATTENTION
Wire ropes shall not be mounted when twisted.
They are to be hanged-up freely in the shaft to untwist and their
ends must be put together in this position.
Torsional movements of the rope while entering the groove are
increasing wear and tear.

5.6 Safety gear check (braking test)
5.6.1 Manual tripping with the rope brake
The supplied rope is hooked-in with the thimble at the lever,
the rope is put into the test groove and the brake lever
inserted.
Initially, the rope is kept slack. To engage the safety gear
wird the rope is tensioned by pressing down the lever; thus
the rope sheave is braked and the safety gear engaged.
In this procedure the down direction is to be observed.
5.6.2 Tripping at rated speed by means of the test groove
Beside of the operative groove with an operating diameter of
300 mm the overspeed governor is fitted with a test groove with
diameter 240 mm.
When carrying out the braking test the governor rope is transfered
from the operative groove to the test groove which rotates with a
speed corresponding to the tripping speed, and the overspeed
governor trips and engages the safety gear.
