Principles of Digital DesignDigital Presentations & PowerPoint

When designing think of a sculptor rather than a builder

Principles of Digital Design

Design starts at the beginning of the process. Design is not decoration.

Principles of Digital Design

Design is a medium of persuasion a way to organize information

a conscious decision to include and

exclude

Principles of Digital Design

A presentation is not only about presenting facts and figures.

Design & the Information Age

Think… packaging information in context and giving it meaning and perspective.

Design principles…

simplicity

Design principles… simplicity

If it doesn’t contribute to the core message, then it distracts.

Also called minimalism. Always edit and cut excess information. Don’t force the audience to search for the main point in a haystack of information. They will probably give up, and most likely not recall anything, let alone your main point.

Design principles… simplicity

“Sorry, I didn't have time to write a short letter…so I wrote a long one instead”

Mark Twain

Simple is difficultCluttered, wordy and complex is easy

Design principles… simplicity

Minimize degradation to the core message objects not supporting the message

inappropriate charts ambiguous labels and icons

unnecessary emphasis

Simplicity amplifies meaning

Design principles…

clarity

Design principles… clarity

Clear, single, unified message.

Don’t force the audience to search for the main point in a haystack of information. They will give up, and forget

everything

What is your main point?

Focal point?

Focal point?

Focal point?

When you look at a slide, be aware of where your eyes go first and what path they take. Is that how you want your

audience to look?

Where is my focal point?

Design principles… clarity

That is… distraction-free.

Design principles… clarityUse empty space effectively

Empty space can convey a feeling of high quality, sophistication and importance.

Empty space gives power to the few elements in your slide.

Design principles…

balance

Use symmetrical design to convey a strong, formal and stable structure.

A symmetrical design has a strong emphasis along a central vertical axis, with information equivalent on both sides. It gives a static feel. In symmetrical design, space is passive and pushed to the outside.

Design Principles… balance

Use asymmetrical design to bring a dynamic feel and interest.

Design Principles… balance

Design Principles… balance

Asymmetrical design activates empty space but is less formal.

Design principles…

proximity

Design principles… proximity

Related elements should be close together

Captions should be close to related images.

Design principles…

contrast

Design principles… contrast

Contrast gives design energy and clarity. Different elements should be clearly different through contrast. Achieve contrast through: Manipulation of space (near/far)Color (dark/light, cool/warm)Text selection (serif/sans serif, bold/narrow)Positioning (top/bottom, isolated/grouped)Manipulate lines, shapes, texture, size, space…

Contrast = Readability, tooUse high contrast between text and background.

Design principles…

affect

Emotional evidence often more persuasive than factual evidence.

Design principles… affect

not simply decorations should add to the message

can persuade, but can also derail the message and mood

Design principles… affectImages more powerful than words

Watch out for contrast:

Images more powerful than wordsDesign principles… affect

When using people in images make sure they are not

looking away from important elements in the

slide.

Design principles… affect

Position objects in “power points” of slide.

Presentation Design… Affect

“Power points” are the crossing points of the grid.

Gives overall design balance, clear flow & point of focus, natural cohesiveness & aesthetic quality.
