Rectal Bleeding 8. Colonoscopy ~A procedure that allows agastroenterologist to viewthe inside of the colon. ~ A flexible tube is inserted intothe anus and threaded carefullythrough the colon using a visual aid (either a t.v monitor of by looking throughthe instrument). What is it? 9. Colonoscopy ~ To investigate blood in the stool (hematochezia). ~Abdominal pain ~Abnormal colon X-ray or CT scan. ~Individuals with a history of polyps or malignancies in the family. Why is it done? 10. Cachexia (Wasting Syndrome) ~An irreversible loss of body mass in someone who is not tryingto lose weight. ~Even if the patient consumes extra calories, the loss of weightwill continue along with muscle atrophy and fatigue.~It is usually a sign of an underlying pathology, such as AIDS,congestive heart failure, or infectious diseases.eg. Tuberculosis.~It is often seen in end-stage cancer and is referred to as Cancer Cachexia. 11. Lavage (cleansing and rinsing) ~ Gastric Lavage, commonly known as stomach pumping.~Normally used on a person who has -ingested a poison -consumed too much alcohol -overdosed on drugs~May also be used before surgery to clear contents of thedigestive tract.
