OBJECTIVE

1. Preparation of an electrically conductive Hand made carpet by in-situ polymerization of pyrrole

2. Study of electrical properties of polypyrrole coated hand made carpet.

3. Fabrication of heating pad for therapeutic use.

.

INHERENTLY CONDUNTING POLYMERS1. Polyacetylene (PA)2. Polyaniline (PANI) 3. Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) 4. Poly-3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT)5. Polypyrrole (PPy)

POLYPYRROLE

There are three different techniques for the synthesis of polypyrrole:- 6. Chemical polymerization technique. 2. Electro-polymerization technique

3. Plasma polymerization technique.

Materials 1) Hand made woolen carpet 2) Pyrrole 3) FeCl3 4) PTSA [ P- Toluene Sulphonic acid Monohydrate ]5) Sodium Carbonate

Methodology 1. Scouring 2. Polymerization 3. Measurement of weight add-on4. Measurement of Surface Resistivity

Results & Discussions 1. Weight add-on %

2. Surface resistivity.

3. Voltage-Current characteristics of electro conductive hand made carpet

4. Voltage-Current behavior for repetative cycle.

5. Voltage-Temperature characteristics of electro-conductive hand made carpet.

6. Effect of time in Voltage-Temperature behavior.

7. Study of Atmospheric Aging.

Weight add on %Add on percentage of the sample is given by ratio of difference of final weight and initial weight of sample to the initial weight of the sample.

Add on % = Final weight of sample – initial weight of sample x 100initial weight of sample

= 26.716 – 22.608 X 100 22.608

= 18.17%

Surface ResistivitySurface resistivity can be measured using equation number – ρs = Rs 2π =RS K ln R2

FABRICATION OF HEATING PAD Materials used Outer layer – Tarpaulin Fabric Inner lining – fine polyester fabric. Intermadiate material- PPy coated Hand Made woolen Carpet

CONCLUSIONS 1. Developed electro-conductive hand made carpet shows good electrical conductivity. 2. The voltage-temperature behavior of the carpet was found suitable for application of heat generation. 3. Time has significant influence in heat generation phenomena. 4. The carpet loses its conductivity with time due to atmospheric aging. 5. As applied DC voltage increases temperature rises so, the carpet may be used as heating garment or a heating pad for therapeutic use.
