PRE-OPERATIVEHERNIAINSTRUCTIONS
1. Mostpatientsrequirebasicbloodworkbeforetheirsurgery.Somepatientsmay
requireanEKG(heartrhythmtest)and/orachestx-ray.Pleasebesuretodiscusswithourofficewhatwillberequiredwhileschedulingyourprocedure.IfyouhavethesetestsfromanotherPhysician’soffice,pleaseletourofficeknowwhilescheduling.
2. Aspirin,Plavix,Coumadin,Lovenox,Pradaxaandotherbloodthinnersneedtobestoppedanywherefrom2-5dayspriortosurgery.Pleasespeakwithourofficeifyouaretakinganyofthesemedications.
3. Donotshavetheareawhereyourherniaislocatedforatleastaweekbeforeyoursurgery.Anyshavingthatisrequiredwillbedoneatthetimeofyoursurgery.Thisminimizestheriskofskininfectionsafteryoursurgery.
4. Donotmarkyourskintoindicateyourhernia’slocation.Yourskinwillbemarkedinthepre-operativeareabeforeyoursurgery.
5. Youmaytakeyourusualmedicationsthemorningofsurgerywithasipofwater.Donottakemedicationsforyourdiabetesoranybloodthinners.
6. Planontakingyourusualmedications(bloodpressure,diabetes,bloodthinners,etc.)theeveningofyoursurgerydayunlessotherwisedirected.
7. PleasereviewourPost-SurgeryPainManagementformtoensureyouhavealltheneededover-the-countermedicationsandanyothersuppliesforafteryoursurgery.
8. ItiscommonforpatientstoexperiencemoderatetosevereconstipationaftersurgeryduetoIVpainmedicationsgivenduringsurgeryandanyoralpainmedicationstakenathome.Havingastoolsoftener(suchasSenokotS)oramildlaxative(MilkofMagnesiaorMiraLAX)availableforafterthesurgerycanbehelpful.
9. Ifyouhaveahistoryofconstipation,takingthesemedicationsBEFOREsurgeryisstronglyrecommended.Manypatientsfindconstipationtobetheirworstissueaftersurgery.Pleaseensureyoumanagethisappropriately.
10. Remember,youractivitieswillbelimitedaftersurgery.Donotmakeplansthatrequiresignificantactivityorstressforthe3-4daysimmediatelyafteryoursurgery.
11. Ifyouhavedisabilityorfamilyleaveforms,youmustbringthemtotheofficeforprocessingbeforeyoursurgery.Pleasedonotgivethemtoyourdoctor.
