Transcript of Powerpoint Small Moments

Welcome to Writer’s Workshop

Everyone is a

Writer!

We write for many reasons

One reason we write is to tell true stories about our lives… We call these Small Moments.

Sometimes kids write a watermelon topic. This is one that’s too big.

Example of Watermelon topic and Small Moment Topic

Watermelon topic:

I went to the beach and had fun.

Small moment:I went to the beach

with my family. One night I rode a mechanical bull for 8 seconds! I held on as long as I could. I fell off on a cushion. We ate ice cream afterwards.

If Marissa wrote about this small moment, it would have a B-M-E

Example: Beginning:I went to the river with my friends and

family. My friends wanted me to wakeboard. I felt nervous and scared.

Middle: I put my lifejacket on and put my feet in the foot holder. I held on tight. The boat took off and I was up! It pulled my arms and I didn’t stay up long. I hit the water with my face.

End: I got up and everyone was cheering and I was happy! I tried many times to get up and fell many times. I will get better.

Instead of just saying I went to the Bahamas and had fun (Watermelon topic). I should turn it into a small moment: I went to the Bahamas with all these kids. One day we went to the beach and had the best day. We played on inflatable in the water, made sand castles, and snorkeled. The dads played volleyball while the mamas laughed. Marissa could catch jellyfish by touching them on top of the head and scooping them up and not even get stung! Before we left, we took this picture jumping on the beach. It was one of my favorite days.

Life is full of small moments

Now let’s go write… and share!!
