In Africa, field studies have shown that 40 to 50% of theperishable horticultural crops lost before they can beconsumed, (25 to 30%), for grains and root crops mainly due tohigh rates of bruising, water loss and subsequent decay (FAO.2014, World Bank, 2012)Post-harvest food loss is one of the largest contributing factorsto food insecurity and under-nutrition (IFPRI,2013)

Factors for food loss are constraints in harvesting methods, storage, transport, process, cold chain, road infrastructures, package and market integration system (World Bank, 2012).

In EthiopiaIn Ethiopia

In Ethiopia postharvest loss rates are reported to range from 30

to 50% depending on the crop ( WFP, 2014)

According to USAID, 2016 the post harvest losses for fresh

produce are 40-50 %, for cereals 30 % and for oilseed 20%

Ministry of Ag also reported in 2015 that post harvest loess

account 20 – 30 % in all agricultural items

> 8 million peoples have no sufficient food (FAO, 2015)
