Transcript of Positive Train Control Systems Explained

Positive Train Control (PTC) is advanced technology designed to prevent train accidents by errors such as overspeed conditions or overrunning red signals

These systems will increase safety on our nation’s freight and commuter railroads.

What is PTC?

Three Components of PTC Systems

Wayside/Track Systems

Onboard Equipment

Office Servers

Wireless and ground-based

communication systems tie each

together

How Does it Work?

GPS satellites send information to trains and crew members on their

location and areas where trains should use caution.

What Happens Next?

Train receives information about route when leaving

station

Wifi communication systems and GPS send operator any changes on the route,

communicating with wayside equipment and servers

PTC tells onboard operator to slow and, if no response, system

automatically applies brakes
