Welcome to St. Rose
Welcome to Historic St. Rose of Lima Church! As
you can see, St. Rose is a magnificent house of God.
It was built a century ago by the Irish Community of
Quincy at the price of many sacrifices. This church, a
historical landmark of the city of Quincy, is
considered as representative of the Venetian Gothic
style: a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine
styles. Before the church was reopened in the fall of
2008, 3 marble altars were installed as well as a
matching altar rail and pulpit. The altars were
consecrated by the Bishop of our diocese, Bishop
Thomas Paprocki on June 10, 2012.
One of the main fixtures of this church is the amazing
collection of stained glass windows (1912)
characteristic of the Munich Pictorial Style. We have
begun their restoration and the first phase of the work
was done in the fall of 2012. With your help, the
project should be completed by the end of 2014. If
you wish to be part of this project, contact the rectory.
A brochure explaining the project of restoration is
available.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but
a chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member
of your local Catholic parish. To join, just give us a
call. After both Sunday Masses, the community meets
in the hall to socialize. Members and Visitors are
welcome! Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Desk of the Chaplain: Septuagesima Sunday The Pre-Lenten Season
This year, Lent begins early with Ash Wednesday on the 13th of
February. In the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite, Lent is
preceded by a pre-Lenten season of seventeen days from
Septuagesima Sunday to the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. This
pre-Lenten season was suppressed with the promulgation of the
New Missal and reform of the calendar. Thus, it is missing in the
Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite. These 3 Sundays have Latin
names: Septuagesima = 70th ; Sexagesima = 60th ; Quinquagesima =
50th . The first Sunday of Lent is also called Quadragesima Sunday
= 40th.
This pre-Lenten season is already a time of penance. The Alleluia
verse is replaced by a tract and is not sung until the Resurrection of
the Lord. Alleluia is one of three Hebraic words used constantly by
our Liturgy with Amen “so be it!” & Sabaoth in the Sanctus:
Dominus Deus Sabaoth = “the Lord, God of (heavenly) Armies”.
Since Pope St. Gregory the Great, the Alleluia is used only from
Easter to Septuagesima.
Hallelujah in Hebrew is transcribed Allelouia in Greek and Alleluia
in Latin. In the Old Testament, the word is found many times in the
Psalter at the beginning of many psalms of praise starting with the
Ps. 104; it is also the last word of the book of psalms. In the New
Testament, it is found in the relation of St. John's vision of the
Liturgy in Heaven:
Alleluia may be translated “Praise to the Lord” or if one wish to
replace the Lord by the meaning of the proper name of God, IHWH
"All hail to Him Who is!" taking "All Hail" as equivalent to "Glory
in the Highest," and taking "Who is" in the sense in which God said
to Moses: "Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel; WHO IS
hath sent me to you." Alleluia is a doxology (hymn of praise)
already present in the Hebrew liturgy and will continue in the
Christian liturgy.
Revelation 19:1 “After this I heard what seemed to be the great
sound of a huge crowd in heaven, singing, 'Alleluia! Salvation and
glory and power to our God! 2 He judges fairly, he punishes justly,
and he has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted the earth
with her prostitution; he has avenged the blood of his servants which
she shed.' 3 And again they sang, 'Alleluia! The smoke of her will
rise for ever and ever.' 4 Then the twenty-four elders and the four
living creatures threw themselves down and worshipped God seated
on his throne, and they cried, 'Amen, Alleluia.' 5 Then a voice came
from the throne; it said, 'Praise our God, you servants of his and
those who fear him, small and great alike.' 6 And I heard what
seemed to be the voices of a huge crowd, like the sound of the ocean
or the great roar of thunder, answering, 'Alleluia! The reign of the
Lord our God Almighty has begun;” 7 let us be glad and joyful and
give glory to God, because this is the time for the marriage of the
Lamb. 8 His bride is ready, and she has been able to dress herself in
dazzling white linen, because her linen is made of the good deeds of
the saints.'”
In the liturgy of St. Mark, presumably the most ancient Eastern
Liturgy, still in use in the Coptic church in Egypt, the Cherubic
hymn is sung before the Consecration: "Let us who mystically
represent the Cherubim, and sing the holy hymn to the living
Trinity, now lay by all worldly cares, that we may receive the King
of Glory invisibly attended by the Angelic orders: Alleluia,
Alleluia, Alleluia!"

Sunday, February 10, Quinquagesima Sunday. After Mass
Beginning of the Devotion of the 40 Hours.
The Forty Hours’ Devotion or Quarant’Ore consists in a public
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament over a period of three days,
beginning around noon of the first day and ending around noon
of the third day.” according to the Clementine Instruction on Sept
1, 1731. It is not required that the Blessed Sacrament should be
exposed for precisely forty hours; Permission to discontinue the
Exposition at night was given to all the dioceses in the USA on
Jan 24, 1868.
The Exposition will begin immediately after
communion at the 11 AM Mass on Sunday, February 10 and will
end with the Noon Mass on Tuesday, February 12. A temporary
reposition shall take place in the evening of the first and second
days at 6 PM. Benediction will be given each evening before the
Blessed Sacrament is reposed. The Blessed Sacrament will be
exposed after the 7 AM Mass on Monday & Tuesday.
This devotion finds its origin in mediaeval customs
such as watching by the Easter sepulcher; it was later connected
with special prayers of expiation at Carnival time. It began in
Milan, Italy in 1527 and ten years later revived by by the
preaching of a Capuchin Friar, Padre Giuseppe da Ferno. It was
then that it was determined that it should last for forty hours and
begin in another church at the exact moment it ended in one and
so be kept up all year round.
The forty hours are in memory of the forty hours
during which Our Lord’s body lay in the tomb between his death
and resurrection. From 3 PM on Good Friday to sunrise 6 AM on
Easter Day is thirty nine hours. St Augustine calls it forty,
counting in the ninth hour (2-3 PM) of Friday.
Although there is no longer a strict obligation of holding
the 40 hours Devotions, the current law of the church says (Can.
942) “It is recommended that in these churches or oratories,
there is to be each year a solemn exposition of the blessed
Sacrament for an appropriate, even if not for a continuous time,
so that the local community may more attentively meditate on
and adore the Eucharistic mystery. This exposition is to take
place only if a fitting attendance of the faithful is foreseen, and
the prescribed norms are observed.”
For those faithful who live far away from St. Rose,
they are invited to participate to the 40 Hours Devotion on
Sunday, either immediately after Exposition or after going out
for Lunch. At 3 PM we will hold our Fatima Rosary Rally but we
will pray the Rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament exposed
and no Benediction will be given. At 6 PM we will have
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and reposition.
The Noon Mass on Monday will be a Votive Mass for
Peace and the final Mass on Tuesday a votive Mass of the
Blessed Sacrament as requested by the Clementine Instruction.
There will be no Exposition and Benediction on Thursday 14.
Tuesday, February 26: Card Party at St. Rose resumes. Doors
open at 11:00 am; Lunch Served at 12 Noon.
