Pastor’s Pen
As we now have past Pentecost Sunday and are in the midst of the time after Pentecost, and the
Holy Spirit and the life of the church are high on our list of priorities for spiritual growth and de-
velopment, I want to share the following thoughts from Mary Lou Redding. I hope this focuses
you upon God and what is possible for Christ through the presence of the Holy Spirit.
“Much of what we know about the spiritual life is subjective, and that includes what we know
about the person and reality of the Holy Spirit. The early church did not have a clear understand-
ing of the Spirit. Even the Ephesians when asked if they’d received the Holy Spirit, responded,
“We’ve not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit” (Acts 19:3, CEB).
Perhaps because of believers’ lack of knowledge, Paul later writes the epistles that give us the bulk
of the Bible’s direct teaching about the Spirit. He introduces the slippery concept of being “led by
the Spirit.” This idea opens one of those doors we don’t want opened: People may do, and have
done, all sorts of crazy things because of feeling “led.”
What are people referring to? Something in the head? the heart? both? How can we know whether
such “leadings” actually come from God? For me these questions go to the heart of our uneasi-
ness: The Holy Spirit is beyond our understanding and cannot be domesticated. We’re usually un-
comfortable with what we cannot tame. And yet the Spirit is how we come to know that we are
connected to God, When the “Spirit agrees with our spirit, that we are God’s children” (CEB).
No one can identify the inner working of the Spirit for or within another person. No one can prove
the reality of the Spirit’s work except by pointing to changed people. Learning to recognize the
voice of the Spirit for ourselves, within ourselves, is a personal experience-one that changes the
rest of our life.”
Come, Holy Spirit. Lead me to open my life to you. Amen
May the Spirit be poured out upon Point Washington this June and always! Read on for ways we
will minister in His name this month--join in where you feel led.
Blessings upon all of you--
Spencer

SUNDAY SCHOOL
New Study for Open Doors, All Ages & Stages
On June 6th, the Open Doors, All Ages and Stages class, held in the Stephen Center, (All are welcome to join at any point) will begin a new study on Adam Hamilton’s book, Making Sense of the Bible. This is a study on
how and when the Bible was written, who decided which books made the Bible and why, and how literally should we take the Bible. From there, we will get into some cultural issues and questions that we commonly
address with ourselves and the outside world. If you have any questions please call Lauren Justiss at 334-701-7777
or email: laurenjustiss@gmail.com
In Making Sense of the Bible, Adam Hamilton invites us into an honest conversation about the Bible. The book begins with foundational questions such as; How and when was the Bible written? Who decided which
books made it into the scriptures and why? How literally must we read it? And, Is the Bible ever wrong?
From there, Hamilton considers the real questions people frequently ask that continue to divide Christians and denominations alike, including:
Were Adam and Eve real people? Why is God so violent in the Old Testament? Why would Paul command women to “keep silent in the church?” Is Jesus the only way to salvation? How does God view homosexual people? Is the Book of Revelation a guide to the End Times? In approachable and inviting language, Hamilton addressed these often misunderstood biblical themes leading readers to a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that we might hear God speak through it and find its words to
be life-changing and life-giving.
Mary McGee shared one of her favorite child’s
Poems with us:
I am the place where God shines
through
For He and I are one, not two.
I will not fret, nor will nor plan
He needs me where and as I am
If I will listen and be free
He’ll carry out his plan for me.

The next monthly meeting of UMM will be June 6, 2015 at 8 AM in the Stephens Center. Come
and join us for breakfast, devotion and discussion of what the United Methodist Men can do for
our community of faith. Our Lord Jesus Christ ventured through the areas we now call the Middle
East searching for the right men to follow him. His goal was to gather together a group of men
that could spread the good news of redemption and salvation to His flock. To set the groundwork
of the church we know today. We men carry a special challenge to further His goal and to that
end, we will be discussing how best to initiate action at PWUMC through the organization of the
United Methodist Men’s group. I hope as many men that are able and available will choose to attend this kick-
off event. We will also continue our discussion regarding the “Pillars of Faith” for the future of UMM at Point
Washington. So come prepared to contribute your ideas and support toward this very important venture. Our
goal is to define, organize and introduce this program to ALL of the men of our church.
In Christ…..UNITED
Danny Powell, UMM President

Many thanks to all who helped in preparing the “Blessing of the Marketplace” luncheon! It was a
great success and we received many compliments for our church’s great love and hospitality.
The next meeting of the women’s ministry will not be until September 1st; but the executive com-
mittee will be having planning meetings during the summer months. We invite you to share your
ideas with any of our officers:
President: Patsy Powell
1st VP: Jane Pinkston
2nd VP: Roxanna Thompson
Secretary: Barbara Brooke
Treasurer: Mary Lamb
Our meetings are the first Tuesday of each month from September through May at 9:30 am in the Stephen Center. If
enough members would like to see a change to an evening meeting, we would consider a change as we want to
reach as many women in the church as possible.
With your help, we look forward to continuing to grow this important ministry in our church and look forward to
every woman’s contributions.
Hope you and yours have a blessed and beautiful summer,
Patsy Powell
