Rescue Plus, Region F Rally, & Chapter P fund raiser

Susan and I were able to spend Saturday the 29th of June

at the Region F Rally in Albuquerque, NM. It was nice

seeing old friends and meeting new people. Diane

Lumpkin was awarded the Region F Individual of the

Year, and Susan and I would like to once again

congratulate her. There were lots of informational

seminars to attend all three days, the AZ and CA drill

teams performed on Saturday, and did a wonderful job.

Chapter A members that attended were Randy & Judy,

Mark & Elena, and Susan & I. Chapter A members in

District Garry & Kerry, Dennis, Dave & Dee, and of

course Diane & Lumpy.

I would also like to remind our members about

GWRRA Roadside Assistance, this is provided by

GWRRA with your membership, for $35.00 dollars more

a year. You can sign up for Rescue Plus which covers

towing up to 100 miles, motorcycle trailers, and your

personal car, and 10 roadside assistance calls a year. For

$80.00 a year you can include your RV. We found out

how well it works when we were on our way to Yuma,

and the rear tire shredded. We called Rescue Plus and

they let the tow truck driver from Yuma know that it was

a touring bike so the driver brought his personal toy

hauler to tow it to Yuma. He said the Gold Wing was too

nice for a flat bed. The tow was 99 ½ miles to Yuma and

it did not cost us any extra. Now how is that for service?

We made to the Prescott Fundraiser, there were a lot of

door prizes, the most sought after were the gift cards, to

restaurants, hardware stores, movies, and there was even a

golf package. Among the grand prizes was a set of

Dunlop Elite 4 tires, I was only three numbers off, maybe

next time. Members present were our Chapter A District

officers Garry & Kerry, Dennis, Diane, and then Susan

and I, as well as Randy & Judy. After the fund raiser we

Last month, my article focused on the personal

safety elements of riding in our Arizona summer

heat. This month, I’m boosting my concerns for the

transformation of normally courteous drivers into

Mr. Hyde(s) behind the wheel or handle bars. Talk

about bumping up Motor Awareness to a new level,

you can almost correlate it to degrees on the

thermometer. Are we part of fuel on the fire, or is

there something we can do to keep our

temperamental cool? Here is an article taken from a

TEAM Arizona motorcycle rider training website

newsletter written by Kelly Teal. I hope you find it

as helpful in putting things into perspective as I do.

Kelly’s Korner: Five Tips for

Battling Traffic in AZ Heat June 30, 2015 Tags: arizona heat, Kelly

Teal, motorcycle traffic

Handling traffic on a bike is not the easiest task. It

gets especially irritating when working against factors

such as scorching heat and insane drivers. Here in the

Phoenix area, both remain in plentiful supply. Some

studies (

http://www.popcenter.org/problems/aggressive_dr

iving ) correlate hotter weather to more aggressive

driving … as if that surprises anyone. And that leads

to my point: As riders, the more distractions we face,

the more we need to be prepared to deal with those

obstacles so we can stay safe on two wheels. Having a

strategy to defeat the blistering hot weather is

crucial. So, as July kicks in and brings with it dust

storms and monsoon rains—which, in turn, lead to

unpredictable, overly cautious drivers—it’s an

opportune time to talk about how to deal with traffic

and all its attendant annoyances. After all, I think we

all enjoy reaching our destinations in one piece.

1. Stay cool, literally. I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: Wear a cool vest or some other

cooling clothing under regular riding gear (because

all the gear all the time, people. All the time.). The

more comfortable my body feels on the bike, the

more likely I am to ride happy and at ease. The

more overheated I am, the quicker my temper

flares. No bueno.

2. Stay hydrated. Drink water throughout the day

even when you’re not riding. Add organic lemon

juice or apple cider vinegar to help the body. On

the bike, have ice water at the ready via a

CamelBak® or similar hydration system. Drink it.

The idea is not for it to slosh around in there and

make hot-water stew.

3. Stay aware. I

swear the full

moon makes

nutty drivers

out of regular

nice people.

So do dust

and rain.

What I’m

saying is, know your surroundings and the

elements. When things get out of whack, the

people do, too. So, if I set out expecting crazy on

the road, I ride more aware and ready to act. That

does not mean I go looking for crazy. (I don’t have

to—it finds me.) I just mean be as ready for it as

possible. Think defense vs. offense. And I’m more

able to do that if I’m cool and hydrated.

4. Stay skilled. Use the tools you have accumulated,

even if you’re a beginning rider. Vision, hard

stops, swerving and braking rank as my top go-to

skills for handling traffic. Stay abreast of these and

gather more through ongoing training. You can

always take part in a class at TEAM Arizona. I

like how the Skills Under the Lights courses break

down one key technique each month. And of

course you can—arguably, should—practice what

you learn every time you ride. I know someone

who works on his swerves (yes, safely) when

commuting.

5. Stay cool, figuratively. Meditation and yoga don’t

have to be woo-woo spiritual. Find a practice you

like, at home or out with other people, and engage

in it at least once a week. The mere acts of

breathing, stretching and relaxing will help you

tune in to yourself. When that happens, you’ll feel

better equipped to gauge your mental, emotional

and physical states, judge how those might play

into your riding frame of mind, and help you to

first react with calm rather than with anger. Sure,

we all rely on motorcycling to blow off steam. But

if we ride enraged or even just smoldering, we’re

adding a dangerous distraction to all of the others,

one that could result in us being scraped off the

road.

Stay safe out there.

GWRRA Events

Hi all, are you ready for the summer riding?

Please, carry water on your bike during any rides

in Arizona. If you didn't make the Region F/New

Mexico District Rally, you sure did miss the free

breakfast (if you had a night stay at the hotel) and

the FUN time. The 2017 Region F Rally will be at

the Starr Pass Resort here in Tucson. We hope to

see you all there.

What do you LIKE about a GWRRA event, at a

Chapter event, District Rally, Region Rally or

Wing Ding? The ride to each event can be an

adventure, stopping at a new restaurant (new to

you), sight-seeing the area which the event is

located. You will meet new friends and may meet

old friends you haven't seen in a year or less.

Maybe you could volunteer to sale 50/50, work

the country store or assist with the onsite

registration. There are so many things to do at any

of the events to have more FUN. I think of each

event as an adventure and a Family Reunion.

Please ride Safe and Keep Smiling :)

If you missed the ride to Mount Lemon, you missed a chance to get out of the heat, cool off a while, and a great ride.

Only nine of us took the ride and had a great lunch and lots of laughs? Cooling off before the ride back down are Dave and Dee, Paul and Debbie, Madeleine and Ken, Ron, and tail gunners Randy and Judy. This was Debbie’s first ride on her new Trike up the mountain and Judy’s first time up too.

On the ride down, we were reminded that watching out for motorcycles applies to everyone on the road. Some of them don’t play by the rules.

We were also reminded of how HOT the last miles home were going to be. Hope you all join us next time. Randy
