Editor’s Desk
Dear readers,
Recently, I have come across an article; Geographica Pannonica, Volume 18, Issue 3, 69-81 (Sept
2014) which studied a rising trend of fake journals and “predatory” publishers that publish articles
without properly reviewing them, and often even charging hefty fees from the authors.
I also came across a 2009 article by Marcia Angell in the New York Review of Books (titled: Drug
Companies & Doctors: A Story of Corruption), where it was discussed how it is very difficult to trust
much of published clinical research by doctors as well as pharmaceutical companies.
Since our institute is also actively involved in research, I felt that these issues are worth addressing.
Earlier, practicing doctors with years of experience used to publish articles to share their findings
with the medical community. These days, even an emerging doctor or therapist are publishing
papers. The major reason I thought is that it is not what they are interested in rather their reputation
and their promotions are measured by the number of publications they have. The scene is not
very different in other areas of research. The aim of research is now to maximize publications. We
often forget that the actual goal of publication is to share the knowledge gained out of research with
others in the field, so that people do not repeat the same studies, but rather make further progress.
Publications from Medical Research are even more important because they bring to attention rare
medical conditions, efficient treatment practices and shape the protocol for treatment of several
cases.
If future therapeutic procedures are shaped by results of improperly reviewed, carelessly done
research, then we are putting people’s lives at stake. We need to ask ourselves if it is worth a longer
list on our CV.
While we can do nothing about the journal hijackers and other publishing malpractices, what we
can do at our level is to be thorough and careful in our own research, and report our findings
honestly instead of aiming for sensational results. These are very small steps, but it is the best we
can do at our level and hope that the efforts add up to give us more trustworthy research.
My best wishes to all of you for the New Year and hope all your endeavors turn out to be fruitful in
2016.
